Speaker's words taken out of context

This letter is in response to the letter to the editor from three Philosophy students in your September 28 issue. Before delving into their "argument," I would like to point out the fundamental hypocrisy and set of weaknesses at the basis of the TA's letter. You cannot be in favor of free speech in a "not in my backyard" manner.

Israel stands to benefit from war in Iraq

This letter is a response to the letter to the editor published in your Nov. 10 issue ("Protest not meant as disrespect to armed forces").Rather than disprove the author's conspiracy theory, I will present a considerably more truthful theory as to who stands to gain from the Iraq war.Whether Saddam Hussein was merely developing or already had WMDs is not that important, but what matters more is that they were no direct danger to the US at any point in time.

International students should respect U.S. culture

In your Sept. 30 issue in the article on international students ("UB's international attraction") you quote Steven Shaw, the director of international admissions as saying that international students are attracted to UB because of "their desire to be immersed in the culture of an American university." I would like to challenge that statement based on my own experiences.I myself am an international student, the only graduate student from Switzerland at UB, in fact, and have been in the United States for over six years now.

Kased unfairly represented

It is with some concern that I have been following your coverage of the SA "scandal."It has occurred to me that you have consistently portrayed SA Treasurer Mazin Kased as guilty, both in editorials and non-editorial articles, despite the fact that his innocence has not been disproven.

Affirmative action is misguided

This letter is in response to George Zornick's April 20 column "Affirming the need to overcome."While affirmative action in and by itself may have been a good idea when it was instituted back in the early 1960s, it has become nothing more than an aberration of its former self.

Suspicious of candidate's motives

While it will be up to the legal branch of our student governments, the Student-wide Judiciary, and not journalists to decide if Elevation candidate Mazin Kased acted inappropriately, if they will even hear the case, this is not the main problem here ("Outside candidates face obstacles as election nears," March 25).First there is the fact that no one has asked how the recording of the conversation with Mazin came about.
