UUP Rallies for Rights of Part-Timers

Inequities in pay and benefits between part- and full-time faculty members in colleges and universities nationwide caused members of the United University Professions, a union for faculty and professionals within the SUNY system, and the Western New York Committee on Contingent Academic Labor to rally in the Student Union Social Room Tuesday.The rally, part Campus Equity Week, used guest speakers, videos and music to explore themes relating to the pay and treatment of part-time faculty.

Language Barrier Can Separate Foreign TAs From Students

The language barrier between students and non-native English-speaking teaching assistants, although sometimes more perceived than tangible, is an issue many departments at UB deal with on a recurring basis.Each year, departments such as computer science and engineering and chemistry field complaints from students dissatisfied with the quality of instruction their TAs provide, many of whom come to UB from abroad."Among the almost 2,000 undergraduate students who take chemistry each semester, we frequently receive a few complaints early in the semester," said Jim Atwood, chair of the department of chemistry.

Technology Meets Society in the Digital Frontier

UB's Center for the Arts will move to the edge of the technological universe Friday when the university hosts "Digital Frontier: the Buffalo Summit 2001." The summit will feature over 40 speakers from around the county and will explore the relationship between technology and society, presenting on issues ranging from "Virtual Citizenship: Character for Characters in Globalized Society" to "The Shifting Images of Women and Computing.""I sort of felt like we needed to change perceptions of Buffalo," said summit organizer Jaylan Turkkan, UB's vice president for research.

Men's Soccer Gets Rowdy at Western Michigan

Apparently, the men's soccer team knows how to get physical. Their 1-1 double-overtime tie against Western Michigan University Sunday was interrupted by 51 total fouls, eight yellow cards and three red cards, and was capped off by a post-match fight between WMU's Andy Fisher and UB's Dave Pidgeon.The Bulls were handed a red card in the 90th minute of play and were forced to play both of overtime sessions with a man down.

Alumni Fund New Generation of Giving
