Students hoping for tickets to see former president William J. Clinton speak at UB filled the Center for the Arts atrium Wednesday, spilling into the building's basement and the hallway connecting CFA to Alumni Arena.Tickets for the April 10 speech went on sale at noon.
After a nearly decade-long absence, the Center for Advanced Technology has returned to UB. The center is now headed by Dr. William Mihalko, associate professor in the UB School of Medicine, head of arthroplasty at Erie County Medical Center and director of orthopedic research in the department of orthopedic surgery at ECMC.Ten years ago, the UB CAT center was de-certified by New York state, because, according to an e-mail from Provost Elizabeth Capaldi, "it was too practical for its time.""They were interested more in basic science at that time," she continued.
It is that time of year again - Student Association elections are quickly approaching and prospective candidates for SA's executive board and the New York State Student Assembly delegation have had a busy week, collecting petition signatures and gaining student support. As of Thursday evening, two parties had announced candidacy: the Results Party and the UB Students Party.
Regardless of New York state law, it's generally assumed that no one has to be 21 to drink. Granted, a resident advisor might bust a student for drinking in his or her dorm, and the police do break up the occasional fraternity party, but for the most part, we live in a country where alcohol is readily available despite the law.
After weeks of languishing in the Student Association Assembly, the three proposed amendments to the SA Constitution finally reached the SA Senate's 21 members, who passed them Thursday night. An amendment to eliminate required cabinet positions of director of student organizations and director of external affairs passed unanimously with one abstention, while an amendment to move the instatement date of new executive board members from April 1 to May 1 passed with no opposition. The amendment requiring presidential and vice-presidential candidates to run on a single ticket faced a much more difficult battle before approval, however, with nine votes supporting the amendment and five in opposition.According to SA Vice President Joshua Korman, the amendment is necessary because when the SA Constitution was written, "SA was a student government in the absolute most stereotypical sense of it" and since then, SA has "shifted into being more of an activities-based corporation."As such, he believes presidents and vice presidents should run on the same ticket to ensure personal or political conflicts will not interfere with their duties and that time is not wasted while officers iron out their differences.

"You know that old trees just grow stronger. And old rivers just grow wilder every day. Old people just grow lonesome waiting for someone to say, hello in there.
The biggest obstacle standing between underage students and alcohol is their age, a barrier many find easy to circumvent almost effortlessly with some careful smudging, a little computer savvy, or a trip to Canada."Fake IDs are easy to get and nearly every [underage] student who drinks has one," said William B., a UB senior majoring in aerospace engineering.According to John Grela, director of University Police, approximately 30 to 40 fake IDs are confiscated on campus annually, mainly during routine stops for traffic violations.

Third seed, eight straight appearances in the finals, winners of five out of the last seven championships, defending tournament champions.
On a campus with a student body that numbers in the thousands, I have discovered an intriguing fact: the phrases "good morning," "hello," and "fine, thanks" do not exist in the vocabularies of the vast majority of the population. Each day I perform an experiment that I began in childhood: when I pass people in hallways or on the sidewalk - concentrate, now, this is the complex part - I talk to them.
