"Distinguished Professor Speaks On Human Rights, Wrongs"

Dr. Claude Welch, distinguished professor of political science, delivered a lecture on the pursuit of human rights in the modern world as the first in a semester-long series of lectures sponsored by UB's Office of Honors and Scholars Wednesday night.According to Welch, editor of "Human Rights and Development in Africa," despite significant progress in recent years toward ending human rights violations in the world, the issue remains a problem both in the U.S.

This is a response to Tai Khandaker's letter in the Oct. 23 edition of The Spectrum. Tai's letter was in response to an article concerning anti-semitism on campus and attempted to produce sympathy in the hearts of Spectrum readers by commenting on the fact that 611 Jews have been murdered since September 2000 while 1,625 Muslims have been killed.

New Licensing Laws

Gov. George E. Pataki is trying to reduce the number of automobile accidents in New York State. Legislation signed this week mandates that 16 and 17-year-olds log 20 hours of driving experience with a driving instructor or a licensed driver over the age of 21 over the course of six months after receiving a learner's permit.
