Taylor Swift is bigger than the music

Whether you love her or are tired of hearing about her, Swift remains impossible to ignore.

Her music plays in stores, her fans dominate social media and every award show seems to come with another headline — Taylor Swift is officially inescapable.

Swift has built one of the biggest careers in modern pop culture. In 2023, she launched the Eras Tour, becoming the highest-grossing tour in music history and attaining billionaire status, with the releases of the re-recordings of her back catalog under the “Taylor's Version” project to reclaim ownership of her masters.

Currently, she’s the most awarded artist in history for three award shows: iHeartRadio Music Awards with 41 total wins, American Music Awards with 40 wins and, most recently, MTV Video Music Awards with 33 wins. She has also amassed the most Album of the Year wins for a solo artist, with 4 Album of the Year wins and 14 total Grammys.

At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, Swift won Video of the Year, Best Direction and the first-ever Artist Director Honors, bringing her career total to 33 VMAs. The Artist Director award earned the most recognition as Swift is known for taking on a role of director for her music videos, most notably “All Too Well: The Short Film” with Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien and her most recent video, “Patient Zero” with Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.

One of the most respectable traits about her is that she wants to be involved in almost every part of her work. She writes the songs, creates the visuals, tells the story and decides how the audience experiences it — whether one likes her music or not, she has an impressive amount of creative control.

With all of her creative and musical choices, it can be called into question if Swift is bigger than the music itself. Her accomplishments have become their own form of entertainment. When she wins an award, the story becomes how many awards she has accumulated. When she releases an Instagram post, Swifties — Swift’s global fanbase name —  immediately start looking for hidden meanings or Easter eggs.  Swift is no longer just an artist participating in pop culture; She is her own pop-culture event.

Swift is interesting when you look at the career she has created rather than just the individual songs. She has managed to reinvent herself multiple times, build an extremely loyal fan base and turn her personal storytelling into an entire brand. Now, with directing becoming a bigger part of her career, she is showing that she wants to be recognized as a creative force behind the camera as well as in front of it.

Swift has reached a level of fame where she is no longer simply competing with other musicians. She is competing with her own history. Every new award, album or record becomes another chapter in her story.

And maybe that is the most impressive and slightly overwhelming part of it all. Swift can be considered as incredibly talented and successful even without the belief that every song she releases is the greatest song ever written — dislike her music, but do not pretend that she has not made an enormous impact on the music industry.

Love her or hate her, Taylor Swift has made herself impossible to ignore.
