Very Necessary
By COREY GRISWOLD | Jan. 17, 2003Coming off of a four game losing streak and with the possibility of starting off their conference schedule 0-3, the Buffalo Bulls women's basketball team needed a win in Eastern Michigan in the worst way.In a game with five lead changes and seven ties, the Bulls went in to action with the Eagles and took their first MAC victory in a 71-65 decision.
State Championship Brings a Challenge
By JASON HAN | Jan. 17, 2003Anyone who has participated in organized sports clubs and teams know that there is a critical point in the season, the one point that can make or break the season and determine if all the players' efforts until that point had been for nothing. For the UB Wrestling team, this kind of pressure and do-or-die mentality does not apply since they have been doing well all season, coming into this weekend with a 6-2 overall record.
"Unlike Celebrity Mole, Losers Not Running Rampant at Alumni"
By MICHAEL SCOTT | Jan. 17, 2003In a strange twist, when Kent State's Bryan Bedford nailed a 3-pointer as the final horn sounded Wednesday night at Alumni Arena to give his team a thrilling 69-68 victory over the UB men's basketball team, it assured me that nobody was going to walk out of that gym a loser.Had Bedford not hit the shot, his team certainly would have felt like losers, one of the Mid-American Conference's best teams falling to winless Buffalo, again. The Bulls had no reason to feel like losers, not after that game, regardless of the outcome. It pained me to see the sting on UB's faces as they watched the Golden Flashes celebrate.
"UB Delivers Random Acts of Kindness"" to Needy Students"
By ALEX TOMLJANOVICH | Jan. 17, 2003UB students who need help paying for the costs associated with college due to financial or personal hardship will soon have somewhere to turn other than loans and government-issued financial aid. With help from a $25,000 donation from the Student Association, UB's Office of Annual Programs established the Random Acts of Kindness Fund as a way to award hardship-inflicted students a one-time-only gift to help stay in school.According to Judy Mackey, special programs coordinator in the Office of Annual Programs, the office will consider awards on a case-by-case basis, rather than awarding a set amount of money to a set number of students each semester."The purpose of Random Acts of Kindness is to help those students who have slipped financially, have suffered extreme personal loss, or are in potential danger of having to leave UB because of lack of funds," Mackey said.According to Mackey, the office has yet to award any money, but "funds will be available for awards this semester." Thus far, Mackey said SA has received few requests for support through the fund.

By GREG FISCHMAN | Jan. 17, 2003John Coltrane enthusiasts filled UB's Allen Hall on Monday night to listen to writer and music producer Ashley Kahn speak about his most recent book "A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album." Kahn's book explores the history of the legendary jazz musician and tells the story of Coltrane's career before and after the recording of "A Love Supreme."In his opening remarks, WBFO Music Director Bert Gambini said Kahn's book clarified many aspects of Coltrane's music."The work he's done with this book has opened doors of understanding, given us a glimpse of slights we had not seen and allowed us to hear clearly today what may have been a mystery a short time ago," Gambini said. After introducing Kahn, Gambini and the author discussed topics covered within the book.

Movie Review: National Security
By NORA HASSON | Jan. 17, 2003Is it possible for Martin Lawrence to make a good film? It seems not, since flops like "Blue Streak" and "Black Knight." Lawrence's latest role in "National Security" just adds another notch into a well-worn belt of garbage movies. This isn't the first time director Dennis Dugan has embarrassed himself with an eye-roller.
