Greiner Discusses UB's Fiscal Future on WBFO

Although President William R. Greiner expects the New York state legislature to reduce the amount of tax money given to SUNY in next year's budget, the proposed tuition increase could fill the revenue void that the cut would create, he said during "Talk of the University," the monthly WBFO call-in show he hosted on Tuesday night."The expectation is that there will be a significant cut in the state tax support for state universities," Greiner said.

SA E-Board Raises Stipend to Cover Tuition

When the Student Association Senate approved the SA budget last spring, they approved a line allowing the executive board of the SA - the president, vice-president and treasurer - to increase their own stipends in order to cover the cost of their tuition.

Revamped Ellicott Food Court Opens Its Doors

Students living in the Ellicott Complex now have an alternative to ramen noodles and macaroni and cheese, with the grand opening of the renovated Ellicott Food Court.The food court, located in Fillmore, consists of five separate stations, each serving a different type of cuisine.Among the new stations are "Greens and Beans," a self-service soup and salad bar; "Sizzles," featuring grilled sandwiches and hamburgers; "Wrap It Up," a deli specializing in wraps; and "Salsa," a Mexican eatery.

UB to Consider Student Anti-Sweatshop Proposal

Members of University at Buffalo Students Against Sweatshops held a press conference on Thursday to discuss a meeting they had with Dennis Black, vice president of Student Affairs, on Tuesday, regarding UB's policy on affiliating with manufactures that own and operate sweatshops across the world.After the press conference, members of UBSAS staged a "die-in" to represent all the sweatshop workers worldwide who have died as a result of the conditions in which they worked.

Unionized Professors Compete for Bonuses

Professors and faculty members who feel they have done something extraordinary during the course of the school year, such as conducting outstanding research or heading an important committee, have the opportunity to nominate themselves for a bonus from the university.Yet, how much bonus money - if any - they receive is completely decided by the chair of his or her department."I could give $5,000, $8,000 or $10,000 to one person - there's no restriction to how much I can give out of the allocation to any one person," said Joseph Conte, chair of the English department.

Evangelist Enrages Students

New York City-based Christian Evangelist Greg Davis filled the front entrance to the Student Union with a crowd of angry students after delivering a "fire and brimstone" speech Tuesday afternoon.Davis stood on a bench outside of the Union and preached to a crowd of students, claiming certain lifestyles, such as homosexuality, are immoral, and he urged students to repent before God.
