"Celebrating the Thai New Year, UB Style"

On the same day as the Thai New Year, the Graduate Student Association Thai International Club held its sixth annual "Thai Night" on Monday, using traditional food, music and dance to entertain and enlighten the participants.According to Methee Chiewanichakorn, president of the Thai International Club and a graduate student at UB, this year's Thai Night improved on the previous two celebrations, which only featured traditional Thai food.

Student Forum Sets the Stage for Affirmative Action Debate

The debate over affirmative action raged across America this week, from the chambers of the U.S. Supreme Court to the classrooms of UB.On Wednesday, one day after the Court heard oral arguments on the issue, the UB Law College Republicans held a forum in conjunction with the Black Law Student Association to exchange opposing viewpoints on affirmative action practices.Langston Mcfadden, vice president of the Black Law SA, said he has been trying to organize the forum since last semester."I wanted us to get together and expose views," Mcfadden said.

Acclaimed Producer Receives Honorary UB Doctorate

Brad Grey, chairman of Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, joined the likes of CNN correspondent Wolf Blitzer and Miramax Films co-chairman Harvey Weinstein when he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the university Thursday.Grey, a 1979 UB graduate, is a producer for The Sopranos, the highly-acclaimed HBO drama; films such as "In Memoriam," a documentary on Sept.

'LEAP'ing Toward Success

The Leadership Development Center is gearing up to connect students to professionals and community leaders this spring, for a one-on-one mentoring experience in the real world.Applications are now being accepted for the center's annual Leadership Experience Achievement Program (LEAP). The program, set to take place April 2, matches undergraduate and graduate students with area professionals to allow students an inside look at a career path."Hopefully, the students will have a chance to see how (the professionals) got to where they are now," said Shyla Benson, a coordinator for the program.According to Katie Scollin, a graduate assistant at the center, 55 professionals - many of whom are UB alumni - are set to volunteer their time."Since it's a leadership mentorship, we try to expose the student to different leadership styles and career paths," Scollin said.

SA TV to Premiere One Week Late

Students tuning in for the premiere of UB's new campus television program, SA TV, were treated to a blank screen Monday night.According to SA President Christian Oliver, the UB administration and Residence Hall Association was concerned about liability and the content of SA TV programming.
