Festivities Celebrate Black History Month

Drumbeats echoed through the Student Union yesterday, as dancers in purple and gold attire performed a traditional West African dance to honor Black History Month.The event ran throughout the afternoon and attracted men and women of all races.According to Christina Clark, president of UB's college chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, yesterday's festivities allowed students to express their views on current social issues.

File Sharing: Giving Consumers a Voice in the Media Market

Thanks to certain Resnetsters, TV-on-demand is a reality for many UB students. Shows like "Invader Zim" and "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer," not to mention all the incarnations of "Star Trek" and various anime shows, can be found with a few taps on the keyboard and a mouse click or two.But a recent subpoena served by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to Verizon requesting the identity of an Internet user who downloaded copyrighted music was upheld in court, raising the question, how safe is downloading these files?This case threatens the privacy of Internet users in favor of an accusation (for which, as far as I was able to discover, no suit has been filed) made by a copyright holder.

In Wednesday's issue, I published an article, "Service With a Smile." The article, which profiled Danyelle "Big Mama" Pitts, contained a paragraph in which Pitts' physical build was compared to that of "a modern-day Aunt Jemima," which many have construed as a comment denoting her race.

If there were more than 10 people from any given religious sect willing to brave the Buffalo cold to picket outside performances at Shea's Performing Arts Center, maybe the fundamentalists need to rethink whether or not there's actually something to protest.While their signs reminded theater-goers that the show featured a supposedly-blasphemous recounting of Christ's life, what they should have been protesting was the dismal performance given by former Skid Row vocalist Sebastian Bach.
