Medical school receives $5 million donation

The John R. Oishei Foundation, Western New York's largest private foundation, announced Wednesday that it has contributed a $5 million donation to UB's new School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in downtown Buffalo. The medical school, which will cost $375 million total and will comprise seven stories and 540,000 square feet, will be constructed in 2016. "The Oishei Foundation recognizes the new UB medical school as a game-changing addition to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

Entrepreneurial spirit captures UB students

For Houghton College graduate Chris Way, the Kenya he studied was not the Kenya he found. On the contrary, the international development student who had devoted his college education to global poverty alleviation and intercultural studies saw great joy in the Kenyan people. Amidst the scarcity of resources, he found an abundance of happiness in the African communities - not only in the streets, but also in the rubber tires that drove on them. Way is the co-founder of the start-up company Atinga, which markets and sells handmade shoes and sandals made by Kenyan artisans from discarded taxi tires. The company plans to reinvent the way global economies work and how Western nations see Africa.

First on-campus ice rink to open spring semester

Before the start of Thanksgiving break, a sign was posted outside the Student Union telling students not to forget to bring a pair of ice skates back to UB after winter break. Starting this spring semester, UB students will be able to ice skate for free on campus.

Faculty Senate passes motion asking UB Foundation to make budget public

The Faculty Senate has passed a motion requesting UB administration make the UB Foundation's budget public - something the non-profit, private organization, which handles the millions of dollars in donations UB receives annually, is not legally required to do. At Tuesday afternoon's meeting, 38 senators physically stood up in support of the motion.

An international market close to home

An aroma of different foods captured the attention of many students lined up outside Student Union 145 on Saturday night. The sights and smells were hard to resist, as performances and cultural cuisines came together to galvanize an estimated 300 people in attendance at the sixth annual Asian American Student Union (AASU) Night Market. The event, which included over 30 different clubs and organizations, is an annual event inspired by authentic night markets that exist in many different Asian countries.

"With heated bus stop on its way, some students question Stampede system "

Some students view the new heated bus shelter as necessary salvation from harsh Buffalo winters, but not every student is sold on the impact of the idea. Though UB has taken steps to make busing safer and easier for students, some think UB's new swipe system and upcoming heated bus shelter outside O'Brian Hall may cause more issues than solutions. Ivan Chao, a sophomore intended communication major, thinks the current state of campus transportation is "disorganized." Maria Wallace, the director of Parking and Transportation Services, said UB put a lot of research into the design process and location, taking the utilities, existing infrastructure and cost into account. "Students will have the option during pleasant weather to wait at the [existing] shelter within Flint Loop, and then during inclement weather they'll have the option of waiting in the heated shelter," Wallace said. Chao said the location of the heated shelter, at North Campus' Flint Loop, could cause traffic and safety issues for students. The South Campus pick-up station is next to Hochstetter Hall, and because the heated shelter is going to be adjacent to O'Brian, Chao worries students are going to run into the Flint Loop to get a seat on the bus.
