Casting Institute Heats Things Up

With beautiful technical execution, UB's Casting Institute poured the fifth of eleven bronze sculptures as part of the Rumsey Restoration Project in the foundry at the Center for the Arts last Friday. The Rumsey Restoration Project is a $350,000 commission that the Casting Institute has been working on for the past eight years involving the restoration of several sculptures that will be displayed at Alumni Arena upon completion.Members of the Casting Institute are particularly excited to be working on this project, as it is the first large-scale commission executed in the foundry."It's the first realization of that investment in terms of giving back to the community," said Julie Silver, president of the Casting Institute.A foundry is the place where artists cast bronze or other metals into sculptures by melting the metal at temperatures of approximately 2,000 degrees and then pouring it into a mold for a sculpture.

"So Much to Say"" About Dave Matthews Band"

Roaring screams and whistles were heard as Boyd Tinsley took his fiddle to center stage during "Lie in our Graves." Dave Matthews stood stage left and allowed Tinsley to enjoy the screaming fans.He knows that providing Tinsley the opportunity to share the spotlight is essential to creating the kind of show long-time fans are used to; the fiddler/violinist filled the arena with the talented sounds of his violin and the audience ate it up.This was just one of the amazing sets performed by Dave Matthews Band last Saturday at HSBC Arena, which sold out quickly enough that organizers jammed some fans behind the stage.

NFL Draft: The Future Is Now

Thanks to changes in the game of professional football, such as unrestricted free agency and the ever-present salary cap, the only way an NFL team can be certain they'll have their stars long enough to make use of them is to get them and use them before they get too good and want too much money. In short, for a team to perform well, it is pertinent that they draft well.Take the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, for example.

"UB Bats Come Alive, Dunford Goes All Nine In Bulls Win"

The UB Bulls baseball team made it's return to the Amherst Pepsi Center Field last Friday on a sunny afternoon, for their first home game since playing an incredible 25-straight games on the road.It was sunny indeed, as the Bulls pounded out 17 hits to pick up their second MAC win with an 11-6 victory over the Bowling Green Falcons.UB starting pitcher Brendan Dunford (2-4) performed masterfully as he went the distance, allowing six runs, with five earned, while recording nine strikeouts."Brendan's a real warrior and when he has his control he's tough to handle," said Buffalo Head Coach Bill Breene."It was great to finally play a home game and win," said Dunford.Bowling Green was first to strike with a second inning RBI by Kevin Longstreth, but Buffalo answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, courtesy of a Corey Blair RBI that scored Jon Boom. The teams traded runs again in the fourth as Tim Sova earned his first of two RBIs on a day that he would go 4 for 4 on."I'm glad to be home," said Sova when asked about his performance. The Buffalo Bats came alive in the fifth as they used four hits to bring in three runs.Things began to unravel for Bowling Green when Falcon starting pitcher Doug Flere (2-5) made an errant throw on a Joe Mihalics sacrifice bunt attempt.

Avant-Garde With a Touch of Heart

A crudely constructed "house" made out of plastic tubing and patterned bed sheets, reminiscent of a childhood fort, stood in the middle of the Atrium of the Center for the Arts, with a rickety, multi-colored ladder protruding from its cardboard roof.
