UB establishing environmental geosciences major

For students looking for the more environmental side of science, UB will be offering a new major in the fall.After student demand for a more scientific-driven environmental studies program, Dr. Mary Alice Coffroth, a professor of ecology in the Geology Department at UB, realized the need at UB for an Environmental Sciences major and answered the call."Several faculty decided that there was a need for environmental sciences rather than environmental studies at UB," Coffroth said.

Brendon Bochacki

Brendon Bochacki is a Western New York native, born in Buffalo and raised in Orchard Park. He attended Nativity of Our Lord grade school and Canisius High School. Brendon's foremost passion has always been music; he has played the guitar since the age of eight. Brendon started his college career at SUNY Geneseo, majoring in biology his freshman year and psychology his sophomore year. Upon transferring to UB his junior year, Brendon changed his concentration for the third, and hopefully final, time to philosophy, and joined The Spectrum as a staff writer for the News Desk, thus beginning his venture into journalism. After one semester as a staff writer, he took up his current position as an assistant campus editor. Following graduation, Brendon plans to work on getting his J.D. and Ph.D. in philosophy, jointly, at the most affordable school that accepts him.

James Twigg

The Spectrum is the first newspaper James Twigg has written for. He started in the spring semester of his sophomore year and has since become an assistant arts editor. His current major is media studies, however, he plans on switching majors so that he can pursue a certificate in journalism. Though he writes about the arts in general, James's main focus is on the music scene. He enjoys listening to new music and increasingly expanding his interests. Concerts, new albums and bands on the rise are James's favorite topics to write about. After graduating, James plans on continuing his career in journalism and hopefully trying his hand at writing for AP Magazine.

Rob Schulz

Rob Schulz joined The Spectrum in spring 2009 as a photographer. After two semesters as a staff photographer, he was bumped up to assistant photo editor in the spring of 2010. Rob has always enjoyed photography as a hobby. He was a writer/photographer for his high school newspaper as well as a contributing photographer for his high school yearbook.

Chelsie Hinckley

Chelsie Hinckley is a freshman communication major at UB. Her passion for journalism began in high school while writing news for her high school newspaper, The Red Review. Her senior year, she was editor-in-chief of the paper. She has also contributed articles to UpstateLive! She began writing for The Spectrum as a staff writer in the fall semester of 2009. After half a semester, she was moved into the position of assistant news editor and this semester fills the position of assistant city editor. Chelsie has yet to figure out her future, considering she is a freshman. She hopes it includes some adventures along the way and ultimately making money by writing.

Jacob Shillman

Jacob Shillman never expected his time at UB to lead to an interest in journalism. However, during the fall of junior year, as the newest assistant editor on the Sports Desk, The Spectrum provided a forum for his journalistic skills to flourish. After moving to News Desk the following spring to better refine his skills as a journalist, he moved on to his true calling: editorial writing. Jacob enjoys discussing national policy and political events that affect average Americans. As a senior, he settled into the editorial editor position, which afforded him the ability to put his interest to good use. Upon completing his time at UB, Jacob will be taking the year off to work in New Zealand on a family farm.

Katie Carlett

Katie Carlett is a senior psychology major and studio art minor. She has been working as a photographer for The Spectrum since spring 2008 and is currently the senior photo editor. She is straight edge and her photographic interests include live concerts and flora. Katie has plans to continue on to graduate school.

Vanessa Frith

Vanessa Frith wrote for her high school literary magazine, Mobius, and started to write for The Spectrum to keep writing and to try something different.

Shane Fallon

Shane Fallon is a senior English major in his fourth semester with The Spectrum. He has worked previously as both a staff writer and staff reporter for the Arts Desk, and an assistant editor for the Life Desk. During his tenure, he became the go-to Arts reporter for many of the new exhibits in Buffalo's art galleries. In his first year with The Spectrum, Shane covered several events central to the UB community, most notably the spring SA elections and Lisa Lampanelli's performance in the CFA. This year, he has worked to bring a more literary perspective to both the Life Desk and The Spectrum, with his tell-it-like-it-is attitude to guide him. Upon graduation, Shane hopes to travel the world, find a job and eventually write a book.

Lauren Nostro

Lauren Nostro wanted to be a broadcast journalist until Tyra Banks stole her thunder. So, this is her backup plan. Lauren has changed her direction and has since found her true love to be in the field of investigative journalism. As a true Buffalonian, Lauren hopes her love for The Queen City will inspire those UB students plagued by Ellicott Syndrome to venture out in their new home.

Amanda Woods

Amanda Woods began writing for The Spectrum in the spring semester of her sophomore year as a News Desk staff writer and was promoted to assistant news editor the following semester. Currently, she is an assistant campus editor. Amanda is a junior English major in the journalism certificate program at UB. She has taken several English courses spanning literature from various time periods, but her favorite courses have always been those that focus on journalism. Although Amanda has always enjoyed writing, it was not until college that her journalistic interest developed. She wants to interact with people through her writing and give a voice to the voiceless. Journalism, she discovered, is the perfect way to do that. Amanda has experience working in two different media and press-related internships. In the summer of 2008, she interned in the press office of the New York City Administration for Children's Services, where she reported on agency events and organized daily press clippings. In the summer of 2009, she was an editorial intern at the Christian blogging Web site revelife.com, where she contributed posts and regulated the content on the main page. Amanda hopes to attend journalism graduate school, paving the way for her future career in newspaper reporting. She aspires to one day return to her stomping ground in Brooklyn, NY and add her journalistic voice to the pages of The New York Times.

Rachel Lamb became an English major when she realized that she would much rather read novels than medical textbooks.

Caitlin Tremblay

Caitlin Tremblay has wanted to be a professional journalist ever since she read "A Tell Tale Heart" in ninth grade English class. Her teacher gave the class an assignment involving reading the short story and then turning the facts into a news story about a homicide. It was love at first comma splice. Thus far in her journalism career, Caitlin has worked for Generation, the former student-run magazine at UB, as a feature writer and assistant features editor. She was a paid intern with the news department at The Daily Gazette in Schenectady, NY, she helps run the web team for Buffalo newsweekly, Artvoice, and has been the Campus Editor at The Spectrum since the fall of 2009. Caitlin is a senior English and history major at UB and will be attending Columbia University for a master's degree in journalism in the fall.

Eric Hilliker

Eric arrived at the University at Buffalo in 2005, initially as a nuclear medicine major. Quickly realizing that nuclear medicine was not for him and that he wouldn't receive superpowers from a freak science accident, he switched to an English major. During his tenure as an English major, he quickly developed an interest in journalism. After taking a number of journalism courses, Eric finally took the Spectrum class. For the first semester he was a mild-mannered reporter for the Arts Desk. He quickly moved up the ladder, first becoming an advance writer and then an assistant arts editor. He is currently the arts editor. He never sleeps.

Andrew Wiktor

Andrew Wiktor grew up loving sports. He spent his time shooting hoops in parks throughout Queens, NY, played little league baseball and soccer and enjoyed nothing more than watching sports with his friends. When he started writing for The Spectrum four semesters ago, he fell in love with journalism. He began as a staff writer in the fall of 2009 and became an assistant sports editor in the spring. Each semester he has assumed a more demanding position at the Sports Desk and is excited to take over as editor-in-chief next year. Wiktor is an English and political science major here at the University at Buffalo. His dream job is to be a beat writer for the New York Knicks, however, he plans to attend law school after he graduates in order to keep his options open.
