The grapevine

As summer draws its final breaths and fall is ushered in, Buffalo enters a new season for music activity. In this weekly installment of The Grapevine, Buffalo exhibits a large variety of artists and venues, ranging from outdoor Indie rock concerts at Artpark lawn to hard, head-mashing electro in the intimate Waiting Room. Come out and see your favorite artists perform or get out and discover new ones – take your pick.

UB Piano Club trying to build ‘from ground up’

Until recently, Alex Schwartz would never have described himself as artistic. Schwartz, an electrical engineering major, never touched a piano in his life until about three years ago when his mother bought him and his brother a keyboard. He said it changed his life. “My whole life I thought I wasn’t artistic and then I started playing piano,” Schwartz said.

The end of the September opens to a year of new releases seeking to engage audiences of all sorts. Films of the fall are set to portray the realities of life and consequences of moral relativism to its audiences while also creating a community of comedic refuge.

Fall Fest fallout: UB students angry about long lines and limited capacity of Fall Fest

Even four days after the Student Association’s annual fall concert, UB students are still talking about the unrelenting rain, painstakingly slow lines and limited space in Alumni Arena. All undergraduate students who pay the mandatory student activity fee of $104.75 a semester get into the concert for free with a student ID, but once the 6,500-arena capacity had been reached Saturday, students and ticketholders alike were refused entry.

This week, Buffalo has an odd assortment of bands coming to the Queen City. From legendary ’90s rap groups to small, indie-rock duos from Tel Aviv, the concert choices are endless. Whether you want a gritty hip-hop concert or a huge festival-style show, you have plenty to choose from.


The Sword’s fifth studio album has helped break the metal band out of its niche, as the musicians experiment with psychedelic rock.

The Sword carves out fresh new sound

On its fifth studio album, Texas metal outfit The Sword eschews some of the heaviness of its earlier works, but loses none of its power. After four albums of traditional metal since the band’s 2006 debut, High Country sees The Sword successfully reinvent its sound in a broader musical context.
