I'm writing in response to Michael Flatt's editorial "Battle of hearts and minds" (Oct. 5). While I disagree with a number of his statements, the statement I'm largely referring to is that "Right wing" conservatives are homophobic because of their opposition to gay marriage.
He stated that the opposition was a "Euphemism for spirituality and faith." He's right in saying that the opposition for gay marriage is based on faith-anybody can tell that George W. Bush is a born again Christian and has an amazing amount of faith; he's taken hit after hit for all of his bold actions against the liberal agenda and the wrong road that this country (and world for that matter) is headed down. Where he's sadly mistaken, is where he said that Christians (and I say Christians, because a lot of conservatives just so happen to be Christian) are homophobic, couldn't be further from the truth.
There have been many wrong statements and ideas thrown out on the internet and any other mass media sources. One could think of stating that "God hates fa**" or that anybody who rejects (or in my case, detests) homosexuality is homophobic, a bigot or any other wrong word used to ignore the truth. God does not hate fa**, and God's followers, like myself, are not homophobic. We hate the sin, not the sinner. When I say I hate the sin and not the sinner, I mean if someone does something I don't agree with or don't support, I don't hold it against them or hate them because of it; it's not my job to do that, my job is to love them because I make mistakes just like they do. If a homosexual person were to come up to me and say "hey man get in bed with me," I'd say "no thanks man, I don't swing that way," but I wouldn't despise him, I'd be friends with him, hang out with him, play some Madden, stuff like that. The same goes for other sexual orientations as well, I'd be friends with all of them, why wouldn't I be? They're created by the same God as I am, and loved by the same God as I am.
