Evading the dining hall diet disaster

Away from home and the comfort of mom's cooking, many collegians are tempted by the urge to splurge on the deserts and the high-carbohydrate meal options that Campus Dining and Shops (CDS) offers, thus leaving little room in their diets for healthier alternatives.When pants get tighter, sweaters get smaller, and students notice a bit of a bulge that wasn't there before, many blame the dining halls for their sudden weight gain.Finding healthy meal options in the dining halls is easier than one may think, however.

UB study lays groundwork for new advancements in heart attack treatment

Maurizio Trevisan, Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Professions, is the senior author of a ten-year longitudinal study conducted in Apulia, Italy that may assist the medical community in preventing heart attacks.The study aimed to discover if glycated LDL (low density lipoprotein), a type of cholesterol with sugar bonded to it, plays a role in heart attack risk.

'Medicated generation' on target

I'm writing in response to the article "The Medicated generation." (Oct. 20) It's about time someone brought this issue into focus (the issue being the depressed state of our generation). Our generation does have a problem, and to expand a little further on what Mr. IIgunas said, we are heading down a wrong road, a road where the easy way out takes the place of the right way, which more often than not involves self-sacrifice, discipline, and self-control.

Rejecting homosexuality not homophobia

I'm writing in response to Michael Flatt's editorial "Battle of hearts and minds" (Oct. 5). While I disagree with a number of his statements, the statement I'm largely referring to is that "Right wing" conservatives are homophobic because of their opposition to gay marriage.He stated that the opposition was a "Euphemism for spirituality and faith." He's right in saying that the opposition for gay marriage is based on faith-anybody can tell that George W.

Bush promotes abstinence

I am writing in response to the recent article "Abortion vocabulary," (Sept. 14). The article stated that Bush was pro-abortion because he was opposing a bill that would allow the over-the-counter sale of Plan B, an emergency contraceptive.
