Former chair of American Studies John C. Mohawk dies

John C. Mohawk, associate professor of American studies, passed away Dec. 10 at the age of 61. American Studies Chair Donald Grinde cited apnea as the cause of death.Known as a "Native American activist on and off campus" by his peers, Mohawk co-founded the Native American studies program at UB, known today as the Department of American Studies.

GSA President Balcom resigns amidst misappropriation claims

In a heated Senate meeting Wednesday night, Graduate Student Association President Aubrey Balcom, on the verge of being impeached for alleged misappropriation of funds, resigned his position.The legislative body's actions were spurred by Balcom's recent trip to a conference in Seattle in which he spent $2,177.78 on restaurants, a hotel room and a rental car, among other expenses.

Gas leak causes Furnas fire

A fire on the fifth floor of Furnas Hall prompted an evacuation and emergency response after a gas line ignited in a lab.According to UB Chief of Police Gerald Schoenle, the building was not damaged and no one was hurt"They were changing a cylinder out in one of their labs, and gas leaked in the line and ignited," Schoenle said.

Cleanup in University Heights could take up to three weeks

Students living on or around North Campus are in luck as things begin to return to normalcy after a snowstorm left thousands without power over the weekend, but those who live near South Campus might not be so fortunate.Despite the fact that 1,300 people showed up for free emergency meals on North Campus this past Friday, Louis Schmitt, director of UB Facilities Operations, assures that everything is now operating as it should on both campuses."All of the electrical power is working.

University Heights still recovering

After a long weekend in the dark, University Heights and surrounding areas can expect restoration of the area this week as power is turned back on and roads are cleared.According to Buffalo Police E-District Lieutenant John King, power was restored to the South Campus area early Sunday morning, although some in the vicinity are still without electricity and heat.The aftermath has left some students scavenging for food and warmth."I still don't have power," said Mary Anne Herzog, an occupational therapy grad student.

Mandatory student activity fee passes in a landslide

After three days of voting in the Student Union, the referendum mandating the $80 Student Association activity fee passed by over 1,900 votes, ensuring SA funds from the entire undergraduate population for another two years.With only 250 votes against the fee, compared to 2175 supporting the referendum, the election was a clear-cut triumph for SA.
