New Rules to Make Fee Votes More Frequent

A set of new SUNY guidelines that were put into immediate effect several weeks ago make a number of changes that will directly affect the Student Association and UB's undergraduate population.Under the new guidelines, the vote on mandatory student activity fees has been changed from every four years to every two, effective next fall.

Simpson Lays Out His Strategy

As part of his plan to take UB from a good school to a great school, President John B. Simpson has developed an eight-part plan and made some major personnel changes on the fifth floor of Capen Hall.In an interview with The Spectrum last week Simpson said UB should be a more accessible school with a strong future vision and a focus on academics first.Echoing the theme of his inauguration speech, Simpson stressed the importance of access to higher education for people of all ethnic and economic backgrounds."Public higher education plays a fundamental role in our society, and I don't want us to ever lose sight of its necessary, critically necessary role in providing access to whoever has the talent," he said.Now 11 months into his tenure at UB, Simpson has outlined eight guidelines to make UB a stronger institution in the world of higher education.

"Mandatory Activity Fee Is Approved, Increase Accepted"

The student activity fee will remain mandatory for the next four years and will increase by $10 next semester after both referendums passed during an SA vote earlier this week.In the coinciding Student Association Senate elections, the Your UB Voice party nearly swept all 12 Senate seats, taking all six on-campus positions and all but one of the off-campus positions.Brittany Shapiro, an independent candidate, won the last Senate seat.When the polls closed Wednesday night, 2,839 undergraduate students had voted.
