TAP state aid program a source of anxiety rather than assistance

Between scheduling classes, fulfilling requirements and struggling to make ends meet, students face a lot of anxiety over finishing their degrees. But this year, due to ineffective communication and a clear lack of administrative organization, the Office of Financial Aid exacerbated those anxieties even further when they surprised students with the abrupt and unwelcome news they were not eligible for grants from the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP).

Tax breaks for the rich and a private jet for Cuomo

The television and film industry is hardly hurting financially, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo insists on helping to alleviate its monetary “burdens” – if we can even call them that – with $420 million in tax breaks.

Legitimate arguments are based on logic, not disgust

I am firmly pro-abortion rights. I am a heterosexual cisgender woman. I have a uterus so I may one day be pregnant and when that day comes, I deserve the right to choose what I envision for my future. If that future doesn’t involve a baby, or at least the present doesn’t make supporting a child a viable option, I have – and deserve – the right to make that choice.

Letter to the editor

The Spectrum’s April 9 article, “The Parking Game: Parking Struggles on UB’s Campuses” by Emma Janicki and Sushmita Gelda should be a wake-up call to all members of the UB community that the individual and collective actions we all take in driving to campus are adversely affecting each other and our personal health.

Celoron loves Lucy, but not her statue's face

The recent furor over a far-from-picturesque statue of famed comedian Lucille Ball has made it beyond clear that the village of Celoron, the childhood home of the actress, still loves Lucy. The uproar, which ultimately made it onto CNN and Fox News, started as many viral protests tend to do – with a Facebook page. From Facebook to front pages, the community’s outrage has taken on a life of its own and blown a minor issue out of proportion.
