Recently, The Spectrum carried an article informing us that UB is seeking a state liquor license to sell alcohol at sporting events in the UB Stadium. I am writing this letter to state that this is an incredibly misguided decision on the part of UB and that they should abandon this effort.
UB has become more eco-friendly over the years. Campus Dining and Shops introduced recyclable and reusable plastic cups last year, UB continues to promote UBReUse at the end of every school year so students can recycle their goods and UB isn’t building on the 200 acres of land east of the Millersport Highway to preserve the area.
What is the value of a graduate student? What work does a graduate stipend support? An Oct. 1 press release on graduate student stipends from the UB communications office offers facts and figures arguing that, contrary to claims made by the Living Stipend Movement, graduate students are already being paid not only well enough, but well period. A “key issues” news page from the UB News Center website, revised on Oct. 23, reiterates the arguments of the Oct. 1 press release without substantive change.
When former athletic director Danny White fired long-time men’s basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon, it felt like a gut-punch to a program that was on the verge of being a consistent Mid-American Conference power.
Last year, the Bulls looked primed for a huge season. With guard Stephanie Reid, Buffalo had its most successful season in program history going 29-6. With a strong group of juniors and seniors, the talented team led UB to its first Sweet Sixteen appearance.
A recent opinion piece published by The Spectrum expressed that UB professors make students uncomfortable when they bring up their political opinions in the classroom because some students inevitably disagree with those views and fear retribution if they speak out. The columnist asserted that because of this, professors should keep their political beliefs out of the classroom.
Oct. 25 marked the beginning of NATO’s Trident Juncture (TRJE18) military exercise in Norway. This event follows Russian military exercise Vostok 2018, an exercise which included Chinese and Mongolian military forces.
Our polling places didn’t hand out “I voted” stickers on Tuesday, but our generation still made a difference. Thirty-one million more people voted in Tuesday’s midterm election than in 2014’s election, according to The New York Times. Projections from CBS News suggest new voters made up 17 percent of total vote, compared to 3 percent in the 2010 midterm election. And ABC News exit polls show that 18- to 29-year-old voters are projected to be 13 percent of the overall turnout this year, up from 11 percent in 2014.
It is an understatement to say the nation was in a frenzy after President Donald Trump won the 2016 election. People were losing their minds across the country, and some of that was at UB.
It’s unfortunate to say that we are living in the era of “fake news.” From news media to social media and mainly our president’s mouth, society has become accustomed to letting news go in one ear and out the other, seemingly unable to trust any source.
Young people aren’t projected to have a big effect on midterms on Nov. 6. But we could. By next year, the U.S. Census Bureau says we will be the largest living adult generation, bigger than Baby Boomers, the World War II babies who have held that title for decades.

Our only hope was Josh Allen but for some reason, they let Nathan Peterman — who throws to the other team more than his own team — play.
