Capaldi Proposes Increasing Research Opportunities for Undergraduates

Undergraduates, non-majors and even high school students will soon have the opportunity to participate in more research projects at UB, if a program proposed by Provost Elizabeth Capaldi takes effect.Under the new proposal, every student will be allowed to register for research opportunities, regardless of major, as a course, independent study or work-study program.The provost cited other universities, such as the University of Berkley, University of California Los Angeles, and the University of Michigan, which have implemented these programs."This is done at some of the finest research institutions," said Capaldi.According to Capaldi, student involvement in the projects is usually limited to graduate students and members of the department conducting the research.

Mike Kruczek's bid for an undefeated conference season ended in his team's first ever conference game.The Marshall Thundering Herd had the honor of being the first MAC team to take down Kruczek's Golden Knights as they handed Central Florida a 26-21 loss in front of 32,900 fans at Marshall Stadium Friday night in a game televised nationally on ESPN2.

Rumble at the RAC

In a game that would have made Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed proud, the UB women's soccer team (2-2-4, 2-1-1 MAC) defeated the visiting Eastern Michigan Eagles (2-6, 1-2 MAC) 2-1 in a physical double overtime affair at RAC Field Sunday.With 8:11 left in the second overtime, Buffalo junior Nicole Olszewski cut through the Eastern Michigan defense to set up the winning goal by Andrea Sullivan.

UB Assesses Feasibility of Recreation Center

UB students who feel that Alumni Arena's workout facility is overcrowded or outdated may be given the option to workout in a state-of-the-art-facility on North Campus.Earlier this month, representatives from a consultation company and an architecture firm came to UB to conduct focus groups composed of students and faculty members to discuss the feasibility of building an on-campus recreation center that would not be affiliated with the Department of Athletics.The idea to build a recreation center at UB has been on the table for about three or four years because there is not enough space in Alumni Arena for athletic teams to coexist with students who just want to work out, said Andrea Constantino, director of student unions and activities.
