Britt, a junior environmental design and political science major, is one of the 54 students who were selected from 200 finalists to receive the scholarship. Britt will receive $30,000 toward her graduate school education and will also travel to Washington D.C. next summer to participate in a professional development program.
Halligan has brought the Meatless Monday pledge to UB in an effort to encourage students to reduce meat from their diets. Meatless Monday is a non-profit initiative with a goal of reducing meat consumption by 15 percent.
Locally Eight-year-old dies after fire After spending a month at Shriner’s Hospital in Cincinnati for severe burns that covered more than 90 percent of her body, eight-year-old Treasure Brighton died Sunday.
Barbara Bono, a UB associate English professor, and UB librarians held a Shakespeare Read-A-Thon on April 21 in the Lockwood Memorial Library Lobby to honor Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary of his birth and death. UB students and professors read out some of Shakespeare’s most iconic works in honor of the anniversary.
Hillel of Buffalo kicked off Passover with two Seder dinners, one on Friday and the other on Saturday night. The dinners were held in Pistachios in the Student Union. The Passover Seder dinner is a Jewish ritualistic feast that marks the start of the Jewish holiday of Passover. Passover is a holiday that celebrates the Jewish liberation from the Egyptians who enslaved them.
Jimmy Corra, a junior economics major and current Student Association Assembly speaker, has been elected UB Council student representative for the 2016-17 school year.
Paul Tesluk has been named the dean of UB’s School of Management after a lengthy international dean search. Tesluk has served as the interim dean of the School of Management since 2015. Former School of Management Dean Arjang A. Assad stepped down from the position in April 2015.
Ajouz, a third-year graduate architecture student, and her fellow classmates are currently working to design a temporary housing community for refugees who have resettled in Buffalo.
Bowers, a transgender doctor who has specialized in transgender surgical procedures and medicine since 2003, spoke about different aspects of her practice on Monday night in the Student Union.
The Chainsmokers, Mac Miller, Icona Pop and Coleman Hell were originally suppose to perform outdoors at Baird Point, but will now perform inside Alumni Arena. Since Alumni Arena is a smaller venue, UB's Student Association stopped selling general public tickets last week so students have a chance to attend the concert.
With 95 delegates up for grabs on the Republican side and 291 on the Democratic side, the stakes were high going into the New York primaries.
UB received over 25,000 applications this year and mistakenly sent acceptance emails to 5,109 applicants earlier this week. The miscommunication occurred when an incorrect email list was generated from an applicant database, according to UB Spokesperson John Della Contrada.
Outside the arena, close to 700 protesters held signs with slogans like, “Love Trumps Hate,” “No Racism in Buffalo,” “No to Fascist Trump,” “Buffalo Says No to Islamophobia.”
University Police are currently investigating vandalism in Goodyear Hall that will exceed $10,000 in repairs. Campus Living sent out an email to residents living in South Campus’ Goodyear Hall on April 15 stating that lights, ceiling tiles, windows and furniture that is “no longer usable” have been vandalized. The email stated a monetary amount is likely to be charged to each Goodyear Hall resident’s bill if no students come forward.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump used Buffalo Monday night as his last campaign stop and a chance to ignite a crowd of over 11,000 people before winning the New York Republican primary.
The New York primary on April 19 will determine how many delegates each candidate will be allotted from the New York state election. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump currently has 756 delegates while Ted Cruz and John Kasich have 559 and 144, respectively.
The UB Council serves as the primary oversight and advisory body to UB and its president and senior officers.
Kenney, along with other students, professors and community members, joined the University Heights Collaborative and University District Common Council Saturday to “ReTree the District,” an initiative to plant 1,000 trees in the University Heights neighborhood off South Campus. The initiative has been going on since 2014 and has separate phases, with this past Saturday being the fourth.
Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican Party nomination for president, is holding a rally at the First Niagara Center in downtown Buffalo Monday. Trump has caused controversy with his comments on topics like immigrants, Islam and abortion throughout his campaign, which has lead some Buffalo residents, including some UB students, to plan protests. Sityar attended a peaceful march started at Bidwell Park in Buffalo Sunday that was organized by a small group of people not tied to any anti-Trump organization. One of the group’s organizers, Ben Caldwell, said the protest is a proactive one and isn’t a response to anything other than Trump’s arrival in Buffalo.
