Visions from an Abstract Voyager

Born in Ethiopia, raised in East Lansing, Michigan and schooled in both Senegal and Rhode Island, artist Julie Mehretu's life has been an ongoing voyage.Now living in New York City, the contemporary abstract artist is starting to stake her claim in the art world.Debuting twelve original large-scale paintings, as well as being the focal point of the Albright-Knox's first installation of "Artist's Eye on the Collection," Mehretu took to the Auditorium stage at the gallery to shed light on her dynamic approach to abstract art."My creative process in the studio is super-intuitive," Mehretu said.

The club hits are what everyone my age downloads, and though I have my share of those, nothing gets to me more than listening to the voices of men and women who lived in an era where strength of character was tested every second.Each time I hear the opening chords of "A Change is Gonna Come," Sam Cooke's 1964 social commentary, I feel like I was born in the wrong time period.

Close Encounters of the Heavy Kind

In a battle of Mid-American Conference heavyweights, the Buffalo Bulls and Ohio Bobcats found themselves involved in a closely contested encounter as they entered the final match on Sunday afternoon in Alumni Arena.In fitting fashion, it came down to the heavyweights themselves, UB's Greg Thomas and Ohio's Jeremiah Beltran, to determine the winner of the MAC showdown.With the Bulls up 16-14 over OU, Thomas and Beltran took to the mat for the match that would decide the afternoon's outcome.Thomas and the Bulls would finally go down in overtime, and Ohio snared a close fought 17-16 victory from UB.
