Revenge Action with Substance

After seeing the trailer for "Man on Fire" and last year's mediocre "Out of Time," it might seem that Denzel Washington's career has sunk to B-rate movies with lousy storylines and big-money Hollywood explosions.However, teaming up with director Tony Scott ("Spy Game," "Enemy of the State") on "Man on Fire," Washington shines with Dakota Fanning in a story based on AJ Quinnell's book of the same name.Washington plays a retired assassin named Creasy.

A Rewarding Soccer Revelation

With no more than a few wooden boxes covering the stage, one costume change and one man depicting every character, "A Night in November" relies on the talent of the actor and the strength of playwright Marie Jones.The play, which is currently running at Alleyway Theatre, stars Jack Hunter as the protagonist, Kenneth McCallister.Hunter is a veteran of the Buffalo theatre scene.

Illmatic Turns 10

Ten years ago to the month, a young rapper from New York City established a connection with the right people, landed a deal with Columbia Records and created a record that for a decade has been hailed as one of the best rap albums ever recorded.The place was the Queensbridge Projects, the right people were producers Large Professor and DJ Premier and the album is Nas's "Illmatic."In order to commemorate the achievements of Nas and his landmark debut album, a remastered special edition has been released.The album is a two-disc set.

All That Jazz at UB

Take a stroll through Slee Hall's spring concert schedule.In the midst of the organ recitals and orchestral offerings is the third annual UB Jazz Workshop concert featuring composer and drummer, Bobby Previte.The concert, which took place on Thursday night, marked the end of Previte's three-day residency in the music department.A large crowd of students and other members of the UB community gathered for the event that, with thanks to the music department, was free of admission.As the house lights dimmed, a unique drum set consisting of both regular and electric drums sat alone in the center of the stage.When the music began, it became hard to believe that one man was producing all of the sounds pulsating through the hall.

For every March in the last 16 years, Nietzsche's has hosted an evening of acoustic guitar, endless denim and longhaired, bearded musicians - all in the name of one man.The gathering, which was held again Wednesday night, was for the bar's annual Bob Dylan Imitator's Contest.

Much like an exotic dish, the enjoyment of classical music typically falls into the two categories of complete love and utter distaste.At the beginning of Tuesday night's faculty recital at Slee Hall, there were representations of both categories in attendance.Slowly, as the music progressed, the crowd thinned and only the enthusiasts remained.

Sense of Punk Community Thrives at the Sphere

On Monday night, downtown Buffalo's Sphere Entertainment Complex chanted and thumped to the sounds of punk veterans, The Dropkick Murphys.Fresh off of a break from touring, the band began a two-month international run with a hard-hitting set played to an enthusiastic and devoted Buffalo crowd.After opening acts by The Kings of Nuthin' and The Unseen, a crowd clad predominantly in spiked belts, mohawks and Irish tee shirts waited in fervent anticipation.Echoing fans at a sporting event, the crowd chanted, "Let's go Murphys," over and over in unison as the lights dimmed and the band took the stage.
