After careful consideration, The Spectrum endorses Timothy Kelly of the Ascension Party.Elevation Party candidate and current SA Treasurer Anthony Burgio clearly has the most experience relevant to serving as president, and his responses to questions during endorsement interviews with The Spectrum clearly demonstrated his grasp of the issues facing the incoming SA president.

Local Rivalry Heats Up

The UB baseball team (3-13, 0-0 MAC) will look to right themselves today against the Canisius Golden Griffins (0-8) in an all-Buffalo doubleheader at Canisius' Demske Sports Complex.The Bulls will look to best the Golden Griffins, a team against which Buffalo has won five of their last seven meetings, dating back to the 2001 season."If we can win a couple of games we will have a ton of confidence going into our conference opener against Akron," said UB's head coach Bill Breene.UB's second baseman Joe Mihalics, who is currently tops in runs batted in and second on the team with a .417 batting average, is off to a quick start this season, riding an 11-game hitting streak in which he has hit at a .447 clip.Buffalo will also look to their other main source of power for offense in first baseman James Kingsley.

A Season to Remember

The 2003-2004 UB men's basketball season may have marked the turnaround in Buffalo's history from cellar-dweller to hopeful perennial powerhouse.Buffalo was streaky, to say the least, in the first half of the year, losing its first three games, then winning its next five, and following that with six-straight losses.The Bulls' turnaround, however, was dramatic.

UB's College Republicans staged a bake sale Monday in the Student Union to call attention to what they say are the inequities of affirmative action.The bake sale drew vehement protests from a number of student groups that said the event smacked of racism.Organizers based prices for the baked goods on a customer's race and gender.

The State of the MAC

Even though the UB men's basketball team did not go as deep into the First Energy Mid-American Conference tournament as supporters had hoped, the team did leave Cleveland with a buzz that was still going come tournament's conclusion.MAC Commissioner Rick Chryst took note of what Buffalo had brought to this year's MAC Tournament along the lines of fan support and appreciation and pointed out that UB was the story of the tournament.Chryst notes that Buffalo, along with the help of the 'Mighty Maniacs,' took the atmosphere of the tournament to the next level."I think every year there is a different story line and UB was a great story for this tournament, regular season, the first round atmosphere, and all that is pretty much a part of coming to Cleveland," said Chryst.

CLEVELAND, OHIO- With 12:47 left in the MAC Men's basketball Quarterfinal game between the top-seeded Western Michigan Broncos and eight-seeded Marshall, Thundering Herd junior forward Eric Smith stole the ball and made a full-court dash towards the basket.In a move that was a microcosm of Thursday night's game, Smith cuffed the ball in his left-hand, faked a behind the back pass across the key and let rip a furious attempt at a dunk that would've brought the Herd within 14.Key word: attempt.As the ball rimmed out and rocketed toward half court and the waiting hands of Broncos senior center Anthony Kann, all hope drained for a comeback and the rout was on.
