Media Scholars Meet for Major Conference at CFA

North Campus became a popular international destination this weekend, thanks to the Department of Media Study's international conference "FreeCollaboration."FreeCollaboration was a four-day long event, running from Thursday night to Sunday afternoon, with dozens of scheduled events taking place throughout the weekend.Organized by assistant professor of media study Trebor Scholz and University of Queensland, Australia media theorist Geert Lovink, the conference focused on new ways of using technology for communication and collaboration."The main focus is on online collaboration," said Scholz.

Thirteen Students Win Nancy Welch Award

Residence hall officials honored 13 students on Wednesday with Nancy Welch Awards for organizing campus events that increased UB's level of community - road trips, cultural events, haunted hallways and impromptu football games.The award was established in 1979 in memory of Welch, a residential coordinator who played a key role in creating a sense of community among students in the then-newly constructed Ellicott Complex.Claude Welch, a professor of political science who was married to Nancy Welch, posed a question to those in attendance."How do you develop a sense of community among 2,500 students?" Welch asked.

In its first year organizing the UB Council election, the Office of Student Life was hoping to break a trend of uncontested elections.Nearly 2,000 petition signatures later, six candidates are on the ballot to replace Jennifer Tuttle as the sole student representative on the Council.The candidates come from a variety of academic programs and backgrounds.

Surveillance Business Lands Panasci Award

A UB graduate with a business plan for an internet-based surveillance company won the 2004 Panasci Entreprenurial Competition awards and walked away with $25,000 in startup capital.The annual Panasci awards, now in their fourth year, provide $25,000 in seed funding to the UB student or alumnus who presents the best plan for a new business in Western New York.

Stevie Starr Leaves UB Hungry for More

A billiard ball - now you see it. Now you don't.And now you see it again.Monday night, Stevie Starr - also known as "The Regurgitator" - stunned a Slee Hall student audience with his one-man swallowing act.Starr ingested billiard balls, light bulbs, live goldfish and more, only to return them moments later amid gasps and nervous shouting from the crowd."It all started when I was four, living in a children's home in Glasgow," he explained.

"At Fun Fest, Students Joust, Dodge and Get Massaged"

Hundreds of students were treated to a free night of entertainment Friday in Alumni Arena, as Fun Fest 2004 drew steady crowds throughout the evening and into the early morning hours.Activities on the sprawling Alumni Arena floor included volleyball, basketball and dodge ball tournaments, as well as free massages, quiz games, an American Gladiators-style jousting arena and an indoor rock-climbing wall.The Outdoor Adventure Club, one of the sponsors for the event, provided the outdoor climbing wall.
