Stevie Starr Leaves UB Hungry for More

A billiard ball - now you see it. Now you don't.

And now you see it again.

Monday night, Stevie Starr - also known as "The Regurgitator" - stunned a Slee Hall student audience with his one-man swallowing act.

Starr ingested billiard balls, light bulbs, live goldfish and more, only to return them moments later amid gasps and nervous shouting from the crowd.

"It all started when I was four, living in a children's home in Glasgow," he explained. "I would swallow pocket money as a hiding place, to keep it from the other children."

The 34-year-old native of Glasgow, Scotland said he can control his stomach and throat in ways that no other human being can.

At one point, Stevie swallowed a locked lock, followed by an audience member's ring, and then the key.

Moments later, Starr coughed up the lock - with a key dangling from the lock and the ring inside.

As another stunt, Starr swallowed a glass of sugar and then drank a small glass of water.

Moments later, he brought the sugar back up, bone dry, simply pouring it from his mouth back to the glass.

Students in the audience were shocked by Starr's digestive dexterity.

"It was totally crazy," said Cara Carleatti, a freshman business management major.

The free event was organized by the Residence Hall Association. Colleen Casey, a senior business major and the organization's vice president, explained how the group came to book such an act.

"My advisor had seen him at Canisius, and the students there really enjoyed him," she said. "She thought it would be fun to get him here."

Plenty of students active in the RHA attended as well, such as Melissa Eldred, a freshman exercise science major.

"It was awesome and he was hysterical," Eldred said. "It was a good time."

Starr is no stranger to show business. He has appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman," "The Howard Stern Show" and "Ripley's Believe it or Not," showcasing his unusual talent to the world. He has also appeared on "Tonight with Jay Leno" 13 times.

Starr says he loves to perform, which may explain his tireless schedule.

"I perform 300 shows a year," he said. "It's great fun."

After his brief one-week stay in the United States, Starr will prepare to jet off to Canada, Denmark and Bahrain, followed by a stay in Australia.

Over the years, Starr has done some strange things with his unusual talents. Once as a part of a Japanese show called "Nippon TV Special," Stevie swallowed 100 live goldfish and then made a trip to the hospital with a complaint of stomach pains.

"One time, in a pub in New Jersey, I swallowed a poison frog," Starr said after the show. "When I brought it back it just hopped down the bar."

Starr said he loves to surprise people with his talent every chance he gets.

"In the airport on the way over, I coughed up my ticket," he said. "'Where are you sitting, sir?' they asked. 'Ahem, seat 4A,' I said. I love joking with people."

Starr said that over the course of a 30-year career, all of his performances have gone off without a hitch.

"This is what's called a misspent childhood," he said.
