"At UB, Grade Inflation a Non-Issue"

Princeton University may soon limit the number of "A" grades it permits its professors to issue, but don't look for it to happen here at UB anytime soon, said administration and faculty officials.Princeton is polling its teachers to find out if they support establishing a quota that would cap the number of A's they grant at 35 percent of total grades, down from the 46 percent currently being given.

Tale of Two Campuses

On the UB Web site, South Campus is described as "picturesque" and boasts that Buffalo is "a big city with a hometown feel."What the Web site fails to mention is that the State University of New York at Buffalo will soon be a relic of the past, and high school juniors will eventually be sending their college applications to SUNY Amherst.It seems to be an unspoken goal for the UB administration to slowly phase South Campus out of existence.

Alternative Ways of Getting Around Campus

This weekend's warm weather and promise of sunny days has cracked the winter shell over UB and sprouted a rejuvenated population of students ready to experience what campus has to offer - minus their cars.Paul Coir, an undecided freshman, said that skateboarding to class in lieu of driving is a good way for him to exercise and clear his head before class."I skateboard to class whenever I can, because it relaxes me and gets me moving before I have to sit for 50 minutes during a lecture," said Coir.James Linz, a senior exercise science major and worker in the Student Health and Wellness Center, feels that daily exercise can have a great impact on a person's mood for the day."When a person exercises, their body is releasing endorphins and serotonin, which are chemicals which work to enhance mood and can generally make a person feel a little more energetic during the course of a day," said Linz.Linz suggested that by taking a stroll around campus, students can influence the way they feel throughout the day."According to the Surgeon General, a person should be getting about 30 minutes of exercise per day.

Over 1,000 UB students traded their jeans for dresses and sweatshirts for suit jackets Friday evening to look their best for the 2004 Undergraduate Student Association Spring Gala, held at Samuel's Grande Manor in Clarence."We have had 15 to 20 galas, and so far, we usually have somewhere around 500 to 1,000 students coming," said Patricia Kujawa, assistant director of SA.This year, the elegant doors of Samuel's Grande Manor opened to a throng of excited UB students.

Henderson Warms Hearts with Lecture About Survival

The Center for Tomorrow - a small, squat building at the corner of Flint and Maple Roads - might be as far from Broadway as any place in New York state.But the gap was bridged Thursday afternoon when Steven Henderson, a theater and dance professor who appeared on Broadway this spring, spoke to a group of about 100 alumni.During a lecture titled "Surviving in the Theater," Henderson discussed how to confront the task of keeping a job on Broadway."Survival is so personal as an artist, you want to put your DNA in it, your fingerprint," Henderson said.
