After a season-opening loss at Syracuse, the Bulls came back strong, winning two of three at the Western New York Tournament at Niagara University.Day oneThe Blue and White swept Binghamton 3-0, showing the rest of the teams and the spectators that quitting was not in the game plan.Buffalo won the match by game scores of 30-26, 30-25, and 31-29, leaving the Bulls 1-1 on the season.Junior Katie Weekley led the stampede with 12 kills and four blocks.

Bulls Clip Hawks

Thanks to another strong effort from sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Bell, the UB Men's soccer team shut out Hartford Saturday on the first day of the annual UB Fall Classic.UB's defense was not to be overlooked, however, giving up just eight shots on goal with Bell recording his second shutout in as many games this season."I thought our defenders played a heck of a game today," said head coach John Astudillo.

Women's Soccer Continues Winless Season

Last weekend at the Arizona Invitational, the UB women's soccer team fell to the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights (1-2) by a score of 3-1 on Friday, and in overtime to the University of California at Irvine Anteaters (2-2) by a score of 2-1.On Friday against the Knights, the Bulls (0-4) struck first in the 31st minute, as senior Jenny Dannecker netted her first goal of the season, and the Bulls' first goal of the year, off a corner kick by senior first-team All-Conference defender Brenna McJury.The Knights came right back with a goal of their own five minutes later as Marguerite Ferrell capitalized on a cross-field feed from Chelsea Adams and knotted the game at one goal apiece.The tie would last for just eight minutes of the second half.

NetPass to Run This Week

To help shield computer workstations from harmful hackers and viruses, UB will introduce its NetPass program this week to all computers on the ResNet campus network, according to Richard Lesniak, director of Academic Computing Services.Once implemented, NetPass will automatically scan every computer that connects to the ResNet system, Lesniak said.

Underdog Davis Gives Jobs Speech at CFA

Businessman and Democrat Jack Davis, who is facing powerful Republican Tom Reynolds in the race for the 26th District Congressional seat, held a press conference outside the Center For Arts building on Friday to discuss the August jobs report issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.Davis, a 1955 graduate of UB, talked about the realities of the job market that college graduates face."I am concerned whether there will be any jobs for these students when they graduate," he said.The report showed that 144,000 jobs became available, missing its expected goal by 6,000 positions.Hitting the predicted number of 150,000 jobs was considered by the Bureau to be necessary in order for the economy to keep up with the pace of population growth."When we should have been creating 6.6 million jobs, we lost 1.1 million, and the jobs we are creating are low paying and require no skill," Davis said.
