Students Pay the Price to Get Home

Students feeling the heat of final exams are finding in the semester's closing weeks that getting home cheaply is easier said than done.For many students, the decision whether to fly, take the train, or catch the bus is based on cost more than comfort, even if it takes extra hours to get home.Adam Palmer, a senior geology and psychology major, said because he doesn't work during the semester, it leaves him with less money to find a way home."I live in Jamestown, so finding a way to get home that is inexpensive is difficult," he said.

Students End Semester With Eight Days of Hanukkah

With Hanukkah set to start tomorrow night, hundreds of Jewish students at UB will celebrate the Festival of Lights for the next eight days by either going home to family, or lighting candles and swapping presents with friends on campus."I am so excited to go home for Hanukkah," said Jon Goldberg, a junior communications major.

"On Sunday, Veterans Remember Pearl Harbor"

Sixty-three years ago, on the morning of Sun., Dec. 7, Japanese air forces attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, launching the nation into World War II.President Franklin Roosevelt called it a date that would live in infamy, but today Pearl Harbor Day is often remembered quietly by citizens and veterans, passing by without many students taking notice.The Niagara Frontier chapter of the Air Force Association held its annual Pearl Harbor remembrance event Sunday with a short film about the 8th Air Force squadron that flew over Europe during World War II."In the past we have had speakers and programs put on, but this year we are just focusing on the unity of the people that come to this event every year.

"Assembly Seeks Longer Hours for UGL, Alumni"

The Student Association Assembly passed two resolutions Tuesday to extend the weekend hours of both Alumni Arena and the Undergraduate Library.The group also discussed a number of other concerns, including campus parking and problems with teaching assistants.The discussion on whether to change the hours of the library, located in Capen Hall, opened with assembly member Leslie Meister."Many international students are here paying for an education and they aren't here for the nightlife.

"Reservists Share Duties of Military, School"

As the largest university in the Western New York region, UB attracts a number of students to enlist in the Air Force, an experience that not only helps pay for college, but also makes a positive impact by challenging students to test their limits.Noah Thies, a junior psychology major, said he joined the Air Force because he wanted to serve his country, among other things."I joined the Air Force for many reasons," said Thies, an aircraft maintenance worker at the Niagara Falls 914th Air Wing in the Air Force Reserves.

"Students Brave Wind, Rain for Homecoming"

The Sea of Blue was a sea of winter coats and giant umbrellas Saturday afternoon as fierce winds and freezing rain crashed the end of Homecoming Week at the Bulls football game.Bundled up from head to toe, both fans and participants stuck it out through the rocky weather for not only the game, but also a series of Homecoming events during halftime.The ceremonies started with a parade around the stadium track by students from UB's clubs and varsity sports teams.

Dozens Trek Bike Path for Crop Walk

The fifth annual UB Crop Walk kicked off Sunday afternoon with dozens of participants ready to stroll down the Amherst bike path, raising money to combat hunger.Sponsored by the Campus Ministry Association and Vive La Casa, a community organization in Buffalo, the event consisted of a five-mile walk down the bike path.

"Shooting for Personal Safety, Gun Rights"

About 60 UB students took aim and fired this weekend at the College Republicans' third annual Second Amendment Rights Excursion at the Niagara Falls Gun Range.Organizers said the main points of the event were gun safety and responsibility surrounding the second amendment's right to bear arms.
