Paul Hebert stared into the eyes of Meredith Viera, awaiting a response as 600 faces and intense spotlights focused in on them. "Is that your final answer?" Vieira said. Viera, host of the show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, rambled off a series of questions while Paul Hebert, a sophomore English major at UB, sat in the hot seat. "It's all so surreal when you're there," he said. Network rules prevented Hebert from telling The Spectrum how much he won on the program, which is scheduled to air at 7 p.m.

The great social experiment

It was less than two weeks ago when Radiohead, after a four-year hibernation period with little indication as to when a new work would surface, announced that they planned to release In Rainbows, their seventh studio album, within the month.In an even more surprising move, the band announced that they would be distributing the work digitally through their Web site inrainbows.com, operating independently of an overhead record label and leaving the price completely to the listener's discretion.

Growing dissent over the planned appearance of former vice president and environmental activist Al Gore came to a head last week when several students took a proactive stance against a speaker they believed to be "detrimental" to the undergraduate population.

Bike Path Rapist suspect arrested

The 26-year hunt for the person responsible for the assaults and slaying of several women on local bike paths - including attacks on UB community members Linda Yalem and Joan Diver - led to the arrest of the man who police say is the "Bike Path Rapist" on Monday.According to The Buffalo News, 48-year-old Cheektowaga native Altemio Sanchez was taken into custody Monday after DNA taken from silverware in an Amherst restaurant was linked to three murders and at least seven sexual assaults in Erie County over the past 20 years, including the rape and murder of UB student Linda Yalem in 1990 and Joan Diver, wife of a UB professor and mother of four, this past October.Vice President of Student Affairs Dennis Black said that Sanchez even went as far as to participate in the Linda Yalem Run, which commemorates the death of the former student, 10 years ago."(Monday) night there was a media report that he ran in the race," Black said.

While some local residents cite Buffalo as a wasteland of squandered economics, officials are now looking at UB - and the surrounding region - as a land of infinite opportunity.
