General education under review

Re-evaluating general education is a long-standing tradition at universities.At UB, it's a tradition that is getting a jump-start this semester as officials follow through on a decision made last January to review the university's basic gen ed requirements."There's been a movement to assessment of higher education for over 20 years," said Peter Gold, associate dean for general education in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Women's soccer bids seniors farewell

The next time the seniors of the women's soccer team visit UB Stadium, it will be to watch a game in support of their former team.A day to honor the team's seniors didn't get in the way of playing a tough game all the way to the end of double overtime in order to tie the playoff-bound Kent State Golden Flashes (8-8-3 overall, 5-4-2 Mid-American Conference).UB controlled the ball for the majority of the game, totaling six shots on goal.

'Capote' needs a little more

"Capote" is one of the frontrunners for Oscar glory this year. While it is a standout flick, some of its faults need to be addressed before jumping on the Capote bandwagon.The movie, a screen adaptation of Gerald Clarke's "Capote: A Biography," focuses on screenwriter Truman Capote's journey in creating the famous novel "In Cold Blood."Philip Seymour Hoffman takes on the lead role with authenticity and gusto.

Men and women swimmers drop two over weekend

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams were both at home this weekend for the first time this season, but each team came out with losses in extremely competitive meets.Although the men lost by a score of 144-95 to Miami (Ohio) on Saturday in Alumni Arena, head coach Budd Termin said that the Bulls (0-2 overall, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) performed very well as Miami (2-0, 1-0 MAC) is known as one of the top teams in the MAC."Miami has historically been the second-best team in the MAC and the meet was almost a tie up to the last three events," Termin said.

McKenna named All-MAC

Speedster Dan McKenna became the first UB athlete of the year to earn first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors as he finished seventh at the MAC Championships on Saturday.The men's and women's teams finished seventh and ninth respectively at Anderson Field in DeKalb, Ill.

Student pleads guilty to tax fraud

A Russian citizen enrolled at UB pleaded guilty Thursday to tax fraud and could face a year in jail and a fine of up to $25,000, according to The Buffalo News.Ozir Ozov, a geography major who is in the United States on a student visa from Cherkessk, pleaded to a misdemeanor count of deliberately failing to file his 2001 non-resident income tax return, the U.S.

Op-Ed contributor /100 new faculty

Provost Satish Tripathi recently announced UB will hire about 100 new faculty members, and eight to ten of these will be "highly visible-national academy level" scholars that would, presumably, be selected in large part according to the results of the UB2020 planning process.That's a terrific thing to do and I wish them well.
