Keeping UB clean

Earth Day is a strange holiday. Instead of taking a day off, it inspires manual labor.This Saturday, students in collaboration with UB Green will have the opportunity to clean up the campus environment in celebration of Earth Day.

Green with environmental zeal

The year 1992 was the hottest year on record, until it was eclipsed by 2002. That was overtaken by 2005, and experts say that record isn't safe either.According to energy policy attorney Luis Martinez, who lectured on ending global warming at Lafayette Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, temperatures aren't getting any cooler, "global warming won't wait." According to Martinez, whose lecture was sponsored by the UB Green office, climate change is happening so rapidly that people must act now if they hope to save the planet.Since 1979, the size of the North Pole has decreased by more than 25 percent.

Faculty Senate okays resignation policy

Under new rules approved on Tuesday, students will have more time to consult advisors and professors before making a final decision about resigning from courses and receiving a grade of 'R.'At the same Faculty Senate meeting, UB officials also discussed two large grants awarded to the Health Services Department and the continued uncertainty over the future of the School of Radiology.The new, later resignation policy, which the Faculty Senate unanimously approved, states: "A student may unilaterally resign a course without penalty through the 11th week of a fall or spring semester, and through the first two-thirds of any other academic term."The problem with the current resignation date is that it comes before many students have their first exam.

"Pfizer grant boosts funds for research, faculty"

Citing an industry-wide need for advanced drug research and qualified pharmacy graduates, Pfizer Inc. will be providing the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences with a five-year grant of up to $7.5 million.The grant -- $1.5 million per year for three years with a possible two-year extension -- will be used to fund research and development in the areas of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics by hiring new faculty, buying new equipment and allotting more slots for students to attend the school."The money's being used to grow the program," said Wayne Anderson, dean of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

"Facing cuts and higher costs, more students rely on loans to pay tuition"

The U.S. Senate passed earlier this month the first decrease in federal assistance to education in more than a decade, and more students than ever could be losing a good portion of their financial aid as a result.These cutbacks, combined with the increasing cost of attending college, have left students looking for ways to make up for that funding gap.
