Good things come in threes

After a dismal start coming off a disappointing season, UB women's basketball is suddenly one win shy of matching its total from last year.To some, three wins may not be much, but after a thorough defeat of Youngstown State, 53-40, on Wednesday night, the Bulls are riding a three-game win streak and have momentum on their side for the first time in recent memory.The Bulls boosted their record to .500 by pounding the opposition down low.

A familiar sight: Bulls dominate Fresno State 85-69

Last year, Roderick Middleton's ESPN-highlight block against Fresno State marked the turning point of the Bulls' season.With that image still dancing in their fans' heads, the men's basketball team trounced the Bulldogs 85-69 on Wednesday, never trailing in a victory that saw the only tie of the game in the first 21 seconds, when the score was knotted at zero.The Bulls (5-1 overall) scored the first 11 points of the game until Fresno State guard Dwight O'Neil finally hit a three pointer almost four minutes after tip off.

Kevin Gatley has always loved the water, and as a senior freestyle specialist on the men's swimming and diving team, he is right at home.Growing up as the youngest of three brothers in Charlton, N.Y., Gatley always wanted to be like his older brothers Eric and Chris.

Volleyball stumbles into MAC tournament

Heading into the playoffs, UB volleyball is still trying to find its winning groove.The Bulls ended their regular season this weekend by dropping their final two games at home, losing 3-1 Friday night to Northern Illinois and 3-0 to Western Michigan on Saturday."In the crunch, we didn't pass the ball which made it so we couldn't be as versatile as we wanted to be," said head coach Jim Lodes.

Rowers win big at Head of the Fish

If finishing the season on a high note is a good thing, the UB rowing team topped off the fall season with its trumpets blaring in harmony.Of the ten boats that UB entered in the Head of the Fish Regatta held at Saratoga Springs, eight finished in the top five in their respective races.

Crew dominates at Head of the Ohio

The fall rowing season started off with a one-two finish in the varsity eight, the best showing the UB rowing team has ever had at the Head of the Ohio Regatta.The fact that the wins came against their two main rivals, West Virginia and Villanova, who defeated the Bulls last year, made the sweep that much sweeter."The team is working really hard, training 18 hours a week, six days a week," said head coach Rudy Wieler.

X-Country's McKenna off to fast start

The captain of the UB men's cross-country team is having a year to remember. In limited competition, junior Daniel McKenna already has a victory and a second-place finish, and the future looks even brighter."My hope is to make top-five in the (Mid-American Conference) and make it to nationals," McKenna said.McKenna has set his personal goals as high as possible and leads his fellow teammates by example.A graduate of Liverpool High School, McKenna ran track all four years and cross-country for three.

Bulls drop three on West coast

After winning four of their first five matches to start the season, the women's volleyball team dropped three in a row this weekend at the Washington State Tournament, quickly bringing the team's record down to .500.The Bulls lost three matches by scores of 3-0, 3-1 and 3-1, never threatening to steal a win in any of the three games.As the only East coast team, the Bulls struggled on this long road trip, failing to establish control of the matches.Buffalo opened play against the Idaho Vandals, losing 3-0.
