International enrollment ranked 11th

Despite a downward national trend, UB continues to increase its international enrollment, and according to one recent report, the school is now ranked 11th in the country among nearly 3,000 accredited universities. The report on international academic mobility placed UB four spots higher than last year's ranking at 15th.Daniel Obst, director of the Institute of International Education, said UB hosted the third highest number of international students in the state last year with 3,965, a figure that places UB within the nation's top schools.Only Columbia University, with 5,278, and New York University, with 5,140, had more international students in New York."It is particularly noteworthy that the number of foreign students is up by eight percent at UB, since nationwide international student enrollments are down slightly," he said.

"Illegal frats not the problem they once were, officials say"

UB officials say a campaign started last spring to quash illegal fraternities has been successful, resulting in minimal activity this semester from banned Greek organizations. After what it perceived to be a spike in the number of illegal fraternities the last few years, UB made it a violation of the Student Code of Conduct last fall to affiliate with unrecognized groups, including those fraudulently portraying themselves as fraternities."They are misrepresenting themselves to students," said Pamela Stephens-Jackson, university liaison for Greek Affairs.

Students toy with chemistry

UB's chemistry majors are out to prove this week that no one plays around like chemistry students do.With "The Joy of Toys," the theme for this year's National Chemistry Week, UB students are hoping to inspire a few future chemistry majors of their own, giving demonstrations of magic writing, making slime, and sailing soap-powered boats at local schools, community centers and scout troops throughout the week.As experts bemoan declining interest in the sciences in the United States, events like chemistry week are trying to recapture that spark.
