$7M from state puts Kelly Institute back on track

After receiving $8.8 million total from the state and a national neurological organization, UB is working to establish two major research institutes for multiple sclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases.With a $1.8 million grant from the National Neurological Multiple Sclerosis Society, officials here are helping to plan the Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence at the Women and Children's Hospital.

Smoker's dilemma: freeze or cold turkey?

The return to wintry weather in Buffalo has pushed many students back into the shelter of the walkways and tunnels this week, but those who choose to smoke in between classes remain out in the cold.The falling temperature and snow-laden gusts did not keep sophomore nursing major Ashley Cleveland from smoking a cigarette before going to study in the library."I just do it for stress," Cleveland said between puffs, when asked why she smokes.

A starting lineup of four freshmen proved to be just what the doctor ordered, as the Bulls halted a four-game losing streak on Saturday against the conference doormat, Central Michigan.Head coach Reggie Witherspoon's prescription for the 73-59 victory was flawless, although it didn't involve X's and O's or an inspired speech.

"Coinciding with biotech center, UB to offer informatics degree"

With the growth of the information economy, informatics has become its own field of study as universities and businesses begin to embrace the need for managing and handling huge amounts of data.In response to industry demand, UB's School of Informatics has announced it will offer a bachelor's degree in informatics, beginning in fall 2006, to provide undergraduates with training in both information technology and interpersonal skills.Informatics is defined as the intersection of people, information and technologies.

When 19th century British novelist Edward Lytton wrote "the pen is mightier than the sword," I wonder if he ever pictured his pen in the hands of a political cartoonist, or that it would be dueling against a wave of violence and destruction across the Middle East and Europe.The controversy began in September when Jyllands-Posten, a newspaper in Denmark, published 12 cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, the most inflammatory of which showed the Muslim prophet with a bomb in his turban.

Men's soccer receives top 10 rankingsAfter finishing 14-3-2 overall in the 2005 season, the men's soccer team received top 10 rankings in four of five offensive categories out of the 30 teams ranked.Amongst the top Division I teams, Buffalo placed fifth in won-loss-tied percentages, sixth in team goals-against average, ninth in highest-scoring offense with 2.37 goals a game, and eighth in shots on goal percentages.Standout juniors Andrae Clarke and Daniel Bell both ranked in the top 30 in individual statistic category.
