"Coinciding with biotech center, UB to offer informatics degree"

With the growth of the information economy, informatics has become its own field of study as universities and businesses begin to embrace the need for managing and handling huge amounts of data.In response to industry demand, UB's School of Informatics has announced it will offer a bachelor's degree in informatics, beginning in fall 2006, to provide undergraduates with training in both information technology and interpersonal skills.Informatics is defined as the intersection of people, information and technologies.

Reinforcing the power of the pen

When 19th century British novelist Edward Lytton wrote "the pen is mightier than the sword," I wonder if he ever pictured his pen in the hands of a political cartoonist, or that it would be dueling against a wave of violence and destruction across the Middle East and Europe.The controversy began in September when Jyllands-Posten, a newspaper in Denmark, published 12 cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, the most inflammatory of which showed the Muslim prophet with a bomb in his turban.

Men's soccer receives top 10 rankingsAfter finishing 14-3-2 overall in the 2005 season, the men's soccer team received top 10 rankings in four of five offensive categories out of the 30 teams ranked.Amongst the top Division I teams, Buffalo placed fifth in won-loss-tied percentages, sixth in team goals-against average, ninth in highest-scoring offense with 2.37 goals a game, and eighth in shots on goal percentages.Standout juniors Andrae Clarke and Daniel Bell both ranked in the top 30 in individual statistic category.

One last jump into the pool for senior swimmers

Five senior swimmers will enter the waters of the Alumni Arena Natatorium for their final home meet on Saturday as the women's swimming and diving team hosts Cornell University.Although the Bulls head into their last match with a record of 3-8 overall and a disappointing 0-7 record in Mid-American Conference action, interim head coach Scott Vanderzell believes his team has plenty of talent, just not enough depth."Our main weakness is our depth," Vanderzell said.

"Facing cuts and higher costs, more students rely on loans to pay tuition"

The U.S. Senate passed earlier this month the first decrease in federal assistance to education in more than a decade, and more students than ever could be losing a good portion of their financial aid as a result.These cutbacks, combined with the increasing cost of attending college, have left students looking for ways to make up for that funding gap.

"UB officials, SA to meet on health center"

Following Valentine's Day, the Student Association will be looking for some extra love from UB officials as the two groups have planned a closed-door meeting for Wednesday to discuss a plan of action for a future health center on North Campus.Administrators had hoped to bring a health center to Amherst this past semester, but it was again stalled due to problems with finances and location.This semester, tensions are higher and the pressure is on to make the project a reality.
