When taking a glance down Niagara Falls Boulevard, with the array of fast food joints, gourmet coffeehouses and big beefy steakhouses lining its curbs, it's not hard to understand why obesity is on the rise.

Old school is new school this spring

What's old is new again in student style this spring. Even with shoppers looking for what's "in" for spring 2006 and designers rolling out lines for 2007, current looks for both guys and girls are steeped in the past."Retro-print t-shirts under a military jacket for guys," said Tara Sigler, a personal shopper in the Nordstrom department store.

Finding fitness in the cold

The long, cold winters in Buffalo may not be ideal stimulation for staying in shape. Finishing class at the end of a lengthy day and digging the car out of three feet of snow is more of an incentive to curl up with hot chocolate than curling dumbbells.Though the dark days can be rough, some UB students and local fitness experts try to come up with creative ways to stay motivated regardless of their surroundings.Jean Jitomir, a registered dietician and second-year nutrition graduate student, said competing in female bodybuilding keeps her motivated through the blistery season."Sometimes it's hard to stay motivated to exercise in the winter because it's hard to find the motivation to do much of anything," Jitomir said.

Program pushes students to real world leadership

Everyone reads the books, sits in the classes and takes the tests.But while UB classes educate, when it comes to getting actual real-world experience in their chosen career fields, it is frequently up to the student to seek out an internship or job.The Leadership and Development Center offers a unique program for students aspiring to one day lead an organization or for those interested in becoming a mastermind in their chosen industry.

Living by the law not always easy

Television can glorify it, jokes can sabotage it and books can make it all too interesting. No matter the spin, however, studying law takes hard work, dedication and sacrifice that few outside the field actually see.Within the first year, law students are exposed to civil procedure, torts, contracts, property, criminal law, constitutional law and ethics.
