Heavy blimp hits Buffalo

Led Zeppelin's music is famous for its vivid, dramatic and orchestral quality. Now that the group is disassembled, the opportunity to experience a performance of their music with a full orchestra on board is a thrilling one.The Buffalo Philharmonic with Randy Jackson, an expert Robert Plant impersonator, performed at Kleinhans Music Hall Saturday night. It was an informal evening by philharmonic standards: musical conductor Brent Havens donned a leather jacket with a Cadillac logo on the back - a reference to the Cadillac commercials featuring "Rock and Roll" - as he rocked back and forth, grooving to the music while leading the orchestra. The show opened with the classic "A Whole Lotta Love," an odd choice for a symphonic adaptation, with its irregular meanderings and strident vocals.

Buffalo baseball waited 18 games and 34 days to play its first home game of the 2006 season, but the Bulls had to wait 24 more hours to finally take to the diamond at Amherst Audubon Field after poor weather conditions forced the team to cancel Friday's game against Central Michigan. On its home field for the first time, Buffalo lost both games in a Saturday doubleheader, 5-0 and 8-0, and was swept aside 12-0 on Sunday by the Chippewas to go scoreless for the weekend. After being so patient to play in Western New York again, the Bulls' first conference victory will still have to wait.Buffalo combined for just four hits in the doubleheader.

Tickets Punched for election showdown

With the election for next year's Student Association leadership starting on Tuesday, the most crowded race in years is starting to live up to its billing, as each party is expected to be campaigning heavily in the coming days.So far, the competition hasn't spurred any major clashes, but while many students remain apathetic, some have expressed worry over various issues the election has created (see "Letters to the Editor, page 5). And if endorsements are any indicator, the student body seems certainly to be divided.

Burning bridges

If Buffalo's Skyway were to fall tomorrow, no one would cry. Well, maybe if anyone were on the bridge when it fell, but there really aren't that many people who really use it.Destroying the Skyway would get rid of an eyesore, expedite Buffalo waterfront development and probably save taxpayers millions.

Republican-from-birth study offers no agenda

I am responding to an article that appeared to stray off your opinions page and landed in the Arts & Life section of your March 24 issue: Alex Nasarewsky's article criticizing the Blocks' study linking party affiliation with childhood personality traits ("Asinine, not academic"). Nasarewsky claimed that the research was "clearly advancing an agenda." Block's agenda was nothing but advancing science.

Student-SA communication should be priority

As a curious and oftentimes concerned member of the student body, I find myself constantly solicited from every direction by abstract notions, like voting for faceless candidates, platforms without even clear plans of realization of their goals, as well as concerns addressed with only appeasing targeted solutions.
