"Blizzard buddies, 80s coats and a neighborhood meeting"

"Is it Christmastime yet?" asked my three-year-old cousin in Philadelphia when my grandfather told him about the snowstorm that unexpectedly hit Western New York Thursday afternoon, and late into the night.Not quite, we told him.Although it did feel eerily like December on Friday morning as my sister and I peered out the front window at any sign of activity from the neighbors, like Mrs. Kravitz from Bewitched.

Friday the 13th spelled more than just bad luck for the university as communication, official response and campus emergency efforts experienced an unforgivable degree of delayed reaction and frivolous inaction.

UB closed Monday as cleanup continues

Taking into account a driving ban in the Town of Amherst, hundreds of thousands of residents across the region still without power and cleanup from downed trees continuing both on and off campus, UB officials announced in a release Sunday evening that the university will remain closed on Monday.The fourth straight day closed, "essential health, safety, and facilities staff are expected to report as scheduled," according to the release.

Resident Advisors made up approximately 80 percent of the Red Jacket Dining Hall on Friday night as students from both campuses and the hotels came in for dinner - several students charged their cell phones while they ate.

Adult student juggles work and school

This fall Jillene Krause is juggling a full-time job, taking 12 credits in night classes and doing the resulting six to eight hours of homework each week.And you thought you were busy.A 36-year-old returning undergraduate student, Krause was initially overwhelmed by the responsibilities she had taken on this semester, but is finally again settling in to college life."My biggest challenge has been time," Krause said.

Saturday can't come fast enough for the Bulls. After a devastating 55-25 defeat last weekend, Buffalo will look to rebound on Saturday against Mid-American Conference rival Miami (OH) at 1 p.m.

Morris strives for higher learning

Coming from a distinguished career as a pioneer in the strength and conditioning field, Buddy Morris, the new Director of Sports Performance, aims to assist Buffalo in its strive towards becoming one of the premier athletic departments in the country.Having worked most recently with the Cleveland Browns, Morris began his career at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980.

Family Weekend

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages: Family Weekend is looking to offer something for everyone with cirque performances, a free movie, a standup comedian and more."This event provides an opportunity for families to come visit their students on campus and get a feel for what college life is like," said Jennifer Wantz, assistant director of student activities.A circus tent pre-game party will kick off the festivities before the football game at noon on Saturday at UB Stadium."We're going to give out clown noses and have cotton candy, popcorn, and hot dogs," Wantz said.

Unprecedented snowstorm hits Western New York

An unseasonably early snowstorm hit the greater Buffalo area Thursday night and Friday morning causing power outages, traffic obstructions and school closings across the region.As of press time, the University Heights district was without power, however all on-campus facilities still had electricity except the Commons.Late Thursday night North Tonawanda, Tonawanda, Lancaster and Akron were all in a state of emergency.
