Women's Lax Flying High

The UB women's lacrosse club participated in a tournament at Grove City two weeks ago in which they had to persevere through thick mud, high winds, and blinding snow in order to succeed. At the end of a long hard road, the club posted victories over John Carroll, Grove City and Virginia Wesleyan in the three games they participated in.

In the first game, on Saturday, April 6, the girls had to slosh through thick mud in order to defeat John Carroll, but they overcame the poor field conditions and hammered them for a score of 10-1.

The score was not indicative of how well the Bulls could have done, said Buffalo's Allison Cox.

"A couple of our shots did not go in the goal because they literally got stuck in the mud," said Cox.

Grove City and Virginia Wesleyan fared no better against the mighty Bulls as they were both shut out courtesy of 5-0 and 6-0 scores, respectively.

The conditions of those games weren't much better, as there was some four to six inches of mud depending where you stood, and at times it was a virtual white-out on the field due to snow. Nevertheless, Buffalo plowed through and left the tournament with head high to move into this past weekend's battle with long-time rival and number-one ranked team in the division Pittsburgh.

The Bulls endured an intense battle with a high-octane Pittsburgh team, but in the end were defeated by the closest of margins, falling 9-8.

Buffalo's morale was not completely wiped away, however, as they knew that they had put their hearts on the line against a tough team and fell just shy of a massive victory.

"The intensity and unity of our team really showed through in this game," said team president Kristen Swanson.

The Bulls will be hosting their own tournament at home this Saturday at Rotary Field on South Campus, starting at noon. Among the teams they will are Michigan State, Ohio University, Slippery Rock and Grove City.
