SA puts the 'giving' in Thanksgiving

Boxes piled with clothes and packages stuffed with food were a sign of the Student Association's annual clothing drive being put into high gear this past Saturday.The clothing and canned goods donated to the drive are dispersed to the Buffalo community."It benefits the Buffalo city mission, a non-profit organization that provides food and clothing to underprivileged families in the area," said Alison Merner, SA club services director.In order to increase donations, SA has given its clubs a challenge that began in October and ends mid-November so that the donations will be ready in time for Thanksgiving."It's a competition between clubs," Merner said.

Creationists versus scientists: whose ideas fly high?

In the ongoing debate of intelligent design versus scientific evolution, film writer and director Randy Olson set out to find which side's advocates can't take flight.His film, "Flock of Dodos," was screened on campus last week, followed by a six-member panel discussion on Friday in Park Hall.The film focuses on representing both sides of the controversy, according to Olson.

Elevator concerns on the rise

Last month in Columbus, Ohio, a student at Ohio State University (OSU) suffocated to death while trying to escape an elevator that was stuck, bringing into question the safety of elevators on many campuses, including UB.

"Gore, Cooper headline UB Speakers Series"

Now announced after the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, journalist Anderson Cooper and environmentalist and former Vice President Al Gore headline the rest of the 2006-2007 UB Distinguished Speakers Series.Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai, ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau and screenwriter Nora Ephron round out the lineup of investigators and intellectuals.Guests invited to speak this year are recognized nationally and internationally due to a "strong activism and passion around people, the environment, peace, and having people think of themselves as part of a global community rather than some part of it removed from the rest," according to Bill Regan, director of special events.CNN correspondent Anderson Cooper will be featured as the next installment for the speaker series, taking the stage at the Alumni Arena on Nov.

Responding to crime and noise in the Heights

In response to increased violent and party-related crime in University Heights, UB Chief of Police Gerald Schoenle has announced plans to work with Buffalo law enforcement to crack down in the neighborhoods around South Campus.According to Schoenle, city police are increasing presence in the Heights starting this weekend and will be enforcing a zero tolerance policy on underage drinking and other public disturbance offenses."Since I've been here, I'm re-experiencing some of the issues that when I used to be a police officer at Precinct 16, which is now E-district around the South Campus, with the loud parties and such and some of the issues we used to deal with, they're still there," Schoenle said Wednesday while addressing the Faculty Senate Executive Committee for the first time this year.
