Dear Editor, We are writing in response to The Spectrum’s editorial “In Prison for Parenting: Inaccessibility of legal abortion options leads to unnecessary risks and repercussions” published on Sept.

Cultural icon or corporate image - Labatt logo on grain silos a questionable choice

With breweries, bars, wine trails and tailgates, Buffalo is a city with plenty of options for alcoholic indulgence (and considering the recent performances by the Bills and the Sabres, there?s no shortage of reasons to knock back a few beers). Now, with decommissioned grain silos redecorated to look like a giant six pack of Labatt Blue, Buffalo?s relationship with beer has ascended to a whole new level. The bright blue color is certainly an improvement over the previous shades of dirty, industrial grey and the new look will undoubtedly attract the public?s attention, generating greater awareness for the renovations going on in the area. The silos? redesigned exterior brings new character to an unattractive building and transforms what was once industrial into a humorous and iconic tribute to Buffalo?s love of beer. But even though this is a clever use of the silos design, and a relevant image for the city, this iconic image is still undeniably commercial. Turning a 100-foot tall landmark into what is essentially a three-dimensional billboard reeks of commodification and invasive corporate involvement.

UB hits 'undo' on a mistake in the making

The people of Buffalo have spoken and in a surprisingly pleasant turn of events, they?ve been heard. After years of emotional contention and unproductive discussion, UB has decided that it will not purchase McCarley Gardens, a low-income apartment complex within the borders of the university?s expanded medical campus.

In prison for parenting

Courtesy of Amber Silter With a few clicks online, Jennifer Whalen helped her daughter end an unwanted pregnancy ? and committed a felony in doing so. The 39-year-old mother of three living in rural Pennsylvania is currently in jail serving a nine to 18 month sentence after ordering mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mutua's unsettling tenure

Despite a hasty appointment, dissatisfied faculty and near invisibility on campus, it wasn?t until Makau Mutua faced allegations of lying under oath that his position as dean of UB?s law school grew tenuous. UB hasn?t said, or insinuated, that the law school dean resigned because of the allegations.

"Kudos to UB for revamping gen ed, but, please cut the jargon"

Art by Amber Sliter Sixty-eight percent of students surveyed called UB?s current general education curriculum something ?to get out of the way.? Seventy-two percent of students said UB exempts or waives them from some or all foreign language requirements. It doesn?t take a math major to see that the gen ed system at UB is broken.

We really believed you and the Spectrum when you assured us that no other unbalanced story would be published. Unfortunately, that trust was breached with your recent coverage of the StandWithUs event put on by UB for Israel. The story was filled with multiple misquotes and fallacies, and was blatantly biased.

Too many UB students are fair-weather Bulls fans

When a tailgate is so massive and fans are so enthusiastic (read: intoxicated) that the University Police realizes its patrol isn?t sufficient, it?s fair to say the event can be deemed a success. An estimated 5,000 students attended the Party at the Point tailgate preceding UB?s matchup with No.

Buffalo's defense finally shows up

Buffalo?s ?D? entered Saturday allowing 46 points and 502 yards per game. Norfolk State?s offense totaled 20 points and 637 yards through its first three games. One of these statistics had to drastically change.

Sexual assaults on college campuses continue to make headlines and universities need to make a difference

It?s an all-too familiar story by now: When senior art student Emma Sulkowicz reported to authorities at Columbia University she?d been raped in her dorm by a male student, her case was dismissed and her rapist remained on campus. But Sulkowicz?s story joins the legions of cases gaining national attention as she, after finding out that two other students also reported being raped by her attacker, has refused to stay silent.

Anything but peace at the Peace Bridge

Art by Amber Sliter The Peace Bridge used to live up to its name. Now, those long-lost days of tranquility and friendship must seem a distant memory to authorities on both sides of the Niagara. With all the political turmoil and violent disputes plaguing the globe, and with needs statewide for reform to New York?s prisons and educational systems, this dispute with Canadian officials must be resolved before ?Canadian diplomatic crisis? is added to the United States? ever-growing list of concerns. More than $150 million is currently devoted to multiple improvement projects at the bridge and the nearby plaza, as a series of infrastructure developments aimed at reducing traffic congestion by increasing queuing space, adding more truck lanes and widening approach ramps broke ground last month. Despite this seemingly positive development, Canadian hackles are raised over the deceptive behavior by Governor Andrew Cuomo and program manager Maria Lehman, who attempted to avoid publicizing details of construction projects until after the deadline for legal objections. This sneaky political maneuvering will only exacerbate the ongoing legal dispute between the two contingents of the Peace Bridge Authority. The litany of complaints expressed by both sides and documented in legal papers accumulated over two years of disagreement range from claims of sexual harassment, improper hiring and firing and defamation. Clearly, tensions are high between the two countries? authorities.

Should you pay to play?

The year is 2014 and everything we listen to has been cut, re-cut, looped, flipped and remixed, however, nothing has been more re-mastered than the way we listen to music. Sites that allow for unlimited streaming like Spotify and Pandora have changed the way that we interact with music on a daily basis. In 2000, a chart-topping album would have millions of copies sold ? in the first week.
