Women's Crew

University at Buffalo's women's crew squad started their fall season last Saturday in Pittsburgh at the Head of the Ohio Regatta.The Bulls lightweight four (Sarah Wold, Karey Smollar, Victoria Kolomiets, Courtney Kane and Becky Mohr) made an impressive showing, with a second-place finish out of 18 teams and scored a silver medal."Competition was tough.

Japanese Culture in Buffalo: A Guide for Gaijin

152 students from Japan have made UB their home this year, and though Buffalo's arduous winters and chicken-wing diet don't necessarily match with Eastern culture, there are some places in Buffalo that accommodate those with a taste for Japanese culture.Adjusting to BuffaloThe Japanese Student Association has nearly 50 members, mostly international students from Japan."It's somewhat hard to organize sometimes; Japanese people don't like getting together in groups as much," said Hideki Kambe, a sophomore economics and mathematics major, a fact which JSA Vice President Junya Narahara attributed to Japan's more individualistic culture.The major differences between Japanese and American Universities?"American people are very, very active," said Kambe, who attended Yokohama University in Japan.

Bulls Look to Stymie Leftwich's Aerial Assault

The Associated Press' game stories on each of the Marshall University football team's three victories this season have begun almost exactly the same way: "Quarterback Byron Leftwich threw for (insert some obscene amount of touchdown passes here), and (insert ridiculous amount of yardage here), as the Marshall Thundering Herd topped (insert overmatched opponent here) Saturday."The UB Bulls will try to alter AP's formula when they take their shot at Leftwich and the Thundering Herd tomorrow at 1 p.m.

SA President Christian Oliver pledged Tuesday night "to make SA a respected institution on and off campus that all students can look to for leadership, protection and entertaining activities."The vow came in Oliver's "State of the SA" address given before a joint meeting of SA senators and assemblymen.He said that for the organization to be successful it needs university administrators' respect, which this year's SA acquired by demonstrating a willingness to work cooperatively with key administrative figures.Oliver cited his Fall Fest dealings with Robert Arkeilpane, director of the division of athletics, as an example of such regard."We could get the best bands in the world, but if they didn't have the one date we had in Alumni, they weren't coming," said Oliver.When SA canceled this year's Fall Fest following the Sept.

At the mid-semester point of fall 2001, striking differences between this the current Student Association executive board and last year's are manifest.This year's SA is regaining the confidence of the UB community by proving to be highly effective and in tune with the needs of the student body, despite having raised some eyebrows at its handling of the mysterious resignation of an elected New York State Student Assembly Delegate and his under-publicized replacement.The previous SA was highly ineffectual, partially due to the president's lack of a coherent vision and failure to command respect from students, faculty or administrators.
