"Ski Resorts, Outdoor Enthusiasts Dreaming of a White Winter"

Every winter, skiers and snowboarders anxiously await the first snowfall of the season. Buffalo winter enthusiasts this year faced a dry November - the first time in the history of the city when there was no measurable snowfall in November - preventing local ski resorts from opening until late last month when a major snowstorm finally hit Western New York, dropping 82.3 inches of snow on the Queen City.The record-breaking snowfall in November 2000 gave the skiing industry a jumpstart that allowed many resorts to open before Thanksgiving.

Student Struck by Blue Bird Bus

A student was struck by a Blue Bird bus while waiting to board the vehicle at Flint Loop Wednesday night.According to a representative from Blue Bird, who asked that his name be withheld, the student was waiting in front of the yellow line on the sidewalk and was not watching as the bus approached.

Serafin Jump Starts Career with Intel Internship

While many UB students spent their summer vacations basking in the sun or visiting relatives, Stacey Serafin tightly packed her car with all her belongings and drove five days cross-country to Oregon, where she served as a research and development intern for Intel Corp., developer of the Pentium processor.Serafin, a senior physics major, worked alongside Intel engineers in a "pathfinding" group, responsible for studying one portion of a personal-computer motherboard and developing an idea for enhancing or replacing its components.

If it were up to Distinguished Professor Bruce Jackson, one of the rooms in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery would house a vintage 1957 pink Cadillac."How can you have a '50s exhibit without a 1957 pink Cadillac?" Jackson asked at the gallery, Sunday.Unfortunately, the classic car would not fit through the doors of the museum, so he compromised, and a rare1952 cherry-red hog (Harley Davidson motorcycle) rests in its place.The item is one of many 1950s-era collectibles UB contributed to the museum that complement the "The Tumultuous Fifties: A View from the New York Times Photo Archives," on display from Jan.

Bulls Exact Revenge With Lopsided Win

Solid teams are marked by their ability to bounce back from disappointing losses. The University at Buffalo men's basketball team, coming off back-to-back defeats, showed they are emerging into that caliber of team after a 75-65 thrashing of the Northern Illinois Huskies (7-10, 3-5 MAC) Monday night at Alumni Arena before a crowd of 1,096.

"Despite Rumors, Junior/Senior Science Still Required - For Now"

A proposal to ease the general education requirements for freshmen and returning students beginning next fall led to confusion when discussion from a Faculty Senate Executive Committee session became rumor among the student body late last week.Students first became aware of the possible modifications to the current policies when Peter Gold, associate dean for general education, spoke to a class of students fulfilling their junior/senior science requirement about the pending proposal, which in its current form would drop the requirement entirely.

MLA Finds New Executive Director at UB

The Modern Language Association, the world's foremost association for the study of modern languages and literature, announced the appointment of UB professor Rosemary Feal to the position of executive director of the organization at its annual convention last December.After an extended nationwide search, the MLA's search committee chose to nominate Feal to succeed retiring MLA Executive Director Phyllis Franklin.

Buying Beauty On Both Sides of the Ocean

In a compelling lecture titled "Purchasing Pleasure: Images of Women in French and American Magazines" in the Center for the Arts Monday evening, French professor Jeanette Ludwig evaluated differences in the portrayal of the feminine experience in magazine advertisements in the United States and abroad.Ludwig, an associate professor in the modern languages and literature department, recalled looking through a magazine with her daughter, Sarah, who was enchanted by an ad featuring a couple dressed in formal wear and engaged in a romantic balcony scene."She turned the page and said, 'I want that, I want to be there,'" said Ludwig.

Wrestling Falls to Top Ranked Opponents

The University at Buffalo's wrestling team entered competition last weekend coming off an impressive outing at the New York State Championships, and was looking to carry that success over into their dual meets.This would not be the case, however, as the Bulls tripped, stumbled and plummeted their way to two-straight losses against top 25 teams Kent State and West Virginia."Kent has been playing spectacular and West Virginia is the 12th-ranked team in the nation," said Bulls Head Coach Jim Beichner.Buffalo dropped to 1-2 in the MAC courtesy of a 28-9 drubbing at Kent State Friday.
