A Streetcar Named Desire
By RACHEL LYNN BRODY | Sep. 18, 2002"A Streetcar Named Desire," the final installment of Studio Arena Theatre's Tennessee Williams retrospective, is nothing short of exhilarating.Although the production stalls at some points due to choices made in the lighting (for example, having the theater bathed in full darkness every few scenes makes it difficult to keep one's mind on the production) and one or two scenes that seem out of place (such as Blanche's (Susan Wands) attempt to seduce a young messenger boy), this piece is one of Studio Arena's best productions ever.

Increased Summer Offerings May Ease Class Squeeze
By KEEGAN S. DALEY | Sep. 13, 2002With the hope of reducing class sizes and providing students with the opportunity to complete their degrees faster, UB Provost Elizabeth Capaldi is proposing an increase in the number of courses offered during summer sessions. The current summer program offers a limited selection of classes and sections, leaving most students to take general education courses during the fall and spring semesters, which are often quickly filled.Capaldi's proposal would offer more sections of lower-level classes during the summer and free up space in classes during the academic year that are often filled to capacity. The provost also hopes to offer a "head start" program for incoming students, more summer study options for graduate students and more positions for teaching assistants and graduate students."I think it's a good idea for students who need the credits, but I would never take summer classes unless I had to," said Laura Hemlock, a freshman theater major.
Textbooks 101: Where Your Money Goes
By BRIAN WEINSTEIN | Sep. 13, 2002Among the long lines, high prices and confusing return policies in many bookstores, students may not stop to think about the reason behind the price of a textbook - and the seemingly disproportionate buyback price.According to owners and managers of local bookstores, they are not to blame.Jonathan Welch, owner of Talking Leaves Books, is quick to correct any misconceptions about who gets the $110 you just spent on your Physics 101 textbook."There's a myth among students that college bookstores that sell textbooks are ripping them off," he said.
