Capaldi Proposes Increasing Research Opportunities for Undergraduates

DALEY | Oct. 2, 2002Undergraduates, non-majors and even high school students will soon have the opportunity to participate in more research projects at UB, if a program proposed by Provost Elizabeth Capaldi takes effect.Under the new proposal, every student will be allowed to register for research opportunities, regardless of major, as a course, independent study or work-study program.The provost cited other universities, such as the University of Berkley, University of California Los Angeles, and the University of Michigan, which have implemented these programs."This is done at some of the finest research institutions," said Capaldi.According to Capaldi, student involvement in the projects is usually limited to graduate students and members of the department conducting the research.

Gang Shootings Erupt on South Campus
By PAUL EPPOLITO | Oct. 2, 2002Gunshots were exchanged on South Campus on Saturday after a chase involving two cars spilled into the Main-Bailey Lot and left one suspect wounded, according to John Grela, director of University Police.Buffalo police believe the violence was an act of gang-retaliation for an incident that occurred in the city and that the shootings had nothing to do with the university, said Grela."This all took place as a result of an incident off-campus on Bailey Ave., between a group of people, and it spilled over onto the campus," he said.
