SA Communication Policy

I was surprised when I looked at the Spectrum's article "SA Scales Back Communication with Campus Media" on Wednesday, Sept 3, 2003, and found that SA had changed its interview policy, insisting that they take questions in the form of e-mail instead of granting face-to-face interviews.

Digging a Foundation for Learning

It may look like it's just a gaping hole in the lawn next to the Jacobs Management Center, filled with piles of rubble, bulldozers and dumpsters - but University officials envision a state-of-the-art addition to UB's rapidly evolving campus, as well as a step towards serious philanthropic donations.

When it comes to music royalty - Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Madonna and James Brown come to mind - few can play an intimate concert like the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.Closing the New Melody Fair's summer season with a big bang last Friday night, Franklin proved that legends do not need football stadiums or hockey arenas to put on a great show. The first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the winner of 15 Grammy Awards, including a 1990 Living Legends Award, Franklin breezed through a short - but sweet - set of some of her most famous songs.

English Department Stays Afloat Despite Wave of Changes

This year's extensive state budget cuts, a 26 percent SUNY tuition hike and an increased student enrollment rate are all having far-reaching affects on UB students and faculty alike. These factors, combined with the loss of two prominent professors, have placed the English department in a delicate situation; however, many administrators say that the department is holding its own, for now."We are doing very well, well as can be expected given budget downturns," said Robert Newman, associate professor and director of undergraduate studies in English.

Poor First Half Dooms Bulls in Opener

PISCATAWAY, NJ - All week leading up to the season opener, UB football head coach Jim Hofher harped that all that you needed to compete in Division I college football was the ability to play "good football."In the first half of Saturday's game at Rutgers, Buffalo did not compete or execute good football, and they then found themselves looking up at a scoreboard that read "Rutgers 21, Buffalo 0."UB would make a strong effort to come back in the third quarter, but their efforts were ultimately derailed in a 24-10 loss at the hands of the Scarlet Knights, bringing their losing streak to a nation-leading11 games dating back to last season."It was a very hard-fought game, and I think both teams showed to be in good condition," said Hofher, whose squad had defeated Rutgers one year earlier for their lone win.

"High Camp, Low Praises: 'Camp' Movie Review"
