Meet the Bulls: Reggie Witherspoon

Throughout his 19-year stint as a coach in Western New York, Reggie Witherspoon has effectively climbed the coaching ladder rung by rung in a way that one could only call progressive.Witherspoon's transition into the realms of Division I basketball has followed a path that appears to be almost cyclical in nature - arriving at UB via Erie Community College via Sweet Home High School, ironically located just around the corner from the UB campus.A life-long native of Western New York, Witherspoon was catapulted into the head coaching job at UB after his rapid tenure at ECC and a lengthy stint at Sweet Home.

Maybe it was the cameras of the Empire Sports Network, the mid-afternoon start or the raucous crowd in Alumni Arena that did it.Whatever it was, the Buffalo Bulls came out of locker room seemingly rejuvenated and unphased by their let down against Eastern Michigan earlier in the week.After letting EMU leave Alumni Arena with an ugly Mid-American Conference win against the Bulls, Buffalo (9-10, 5-6 MAC) head coach Reggie Witherspoon had this to say about his team's mentality coming into the Marshall game: "We asked them going into the game to issue a statement of response to Wednesday night's game," said Witherspoon.

Petty crime in the University Heights is up, according to a recent analysis -- and many residents are blaming the student house next door.A recent study by The Buffalo News found that while Buffalo's violent crime rate is down, quality-of-life crime in University Heights increased 25 percent over the past four years.

Streaky Bulls Stopped Cold by Eagles

The Bulls (8-10, 4-6 Mid-American Conference) entered the game Wednesday night against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (8-10, 3-7 MAC) with a chance to extend their winning streak to four games and reach .500 for the fist time in 2004.However, a second-half UB collapse at both ends of the court sparked the Eagles to a 43-point second half and a big win over Buffalo, 77-66, in front of 1,823 at Alumni Arena."We were awful, and they played well," said head coach Reggie Witherspoon.

The UB women's basketball team looks to grab their sixth win of the season this Saturday afternoon when they go on the road against their Mid-American Conference rival Ohio Bobcats.Buffalo (5-13, 3-5 MAC) is coming off a come-from-behind 65-61 victory over the Toledo Rockets on Wednesday night, and have won four of their last eight after starting the season with only one win in their first ten games.

Former UB Students Arraigned on Kidnapping Charges

Four gunpoint kidnappings on both UB campuses in October and November may have been solved Wednesday, with the arraignment of four University Heights area men, two of whom were UB students at the time of the crimes.The defendants allegedly abducted and robbed students whom they suspected were marijuana dealers, because dealers might be hesitant to involve police, investigators said."They thought that the kids were selling grass on campus," said Erie County District Attorney Frank J.
