'Breeding Season' Breeds Boredom

Six partially filled black buckets sat scattered on the stained wood floor.Unlike the rest of the dimly lit room, they were not there on display, but to serve the purpose of collecting the dripping rainwater coming from several holes in the badly insulated roof.This is the current scene in the Big Orbit Gallery, located at 30D Essex St.

A sorry ritual played out Tuesday morning in the woods near the Ellicott Complex, as two pledges to a UB fraternity were allegedly forced to lay in mud in the early hours of a bitingly cold morning.

UB Profs Design Swimsuit for Olympics

As the world looks towards Athens and the 2004 summer Olympics, some U.S. Olympic swimmers are looking towards UB for the latest in high-tech swimwear.Two UB professors from the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, along with the men's swim coach, have designed a new swimsuit called the "Turbulator" that increases swimming speed by decreasing drag.Professors David Pendergast and Joseph Mollendorf and men's swim coach Albert Termin teamed up with swimwear company TYR to design, create and distribute the new suit."TYR were partners in this with us providing the basic design and them making the actual suit," the two professors stated in a joint e-mail.

Business Scandals Prompt Development of New Ethics Course

Grumbling may be heard this fall around the Jacobs Management Center as UB's Masters of Business Administration students mutter curses about the likes of John Rigas, Martha Stewart and Dennis Kozlowski.Fall 2005 is the target date for the beginning of a new, mandatory course in business ethics currently being developed by the School of Management's MBA program, mainly as a response to the business scandals that have cropped up in the news recently."It comes out of this round of corporate problems, harking back to Enron as sort of the initial blow-out," said David Frasier, assistant dean of the business school and its director of MBA programs.There are no requirements for the business school to have an ethics course, but Frasier believes the current headlines have demonstrated the need for one."My personal opinion is that if we have adequate depth in personal ethics, then there is no need for corporate ethics.

Two Games Too Close to Call

The Bulls were looking to take a step in the right direction when they opened up conference play last weekend, but weather and the Akron Zips clouded those chances.UB (5-17 overall, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) will face cross-town rival Niagara (7-13, 3-1 Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference) in a double header today at Amherst Audubon Field.Buffalo opened the conference schedule with two losses against Akron on Saturday.

UB Alumni Named Among Top U.S. Black Lawyers

Four UB alumni have been named by Black Enterprise Magazine as some of the top 100 black lawyers in the country.Michael Battle, Brent Wilson, Michael Banks, and Vincent Dunn all received awards.Carolyn Brown, editor at large of Black Enterprise, said a majority of the lawyers selected are partners in the nation's top law firms.

Provost Search Nears End

After months of looking for a replacement for former provost Elizabeth Capaldi, the university's search is coming to an end.Satish Tripathi, dean of engineering at the University of California, Riverside; David Daniel, dean of engineering at the University of Illinois; and Martin Moskovits, dean of mathematical, life and physical sciences in the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara have been named finalists in the search.Each candidate paid a visit to UB and shared their thoughts on the school in separate open forums last week."I think we are excited to be looking at the future as we meet these candidates today," stated Dennis Black, vice president of Student Affairs, in an email.

Doubleheader Saturday: Two And Out

The UB Bulls baseball team (5-17, 0-2 MAC) opened their conference play on Saturday against the University of Akron Zips (11-8, 2-0), hosting a doubleheader after Friday afternoon's rainout.The teams looked equally competitive all afternoon, but in both games the Zips needed just the ninth inning to produce enough offense to defeat UB, 6-5 and 6-1 respectively.In game one, Akron jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth, which included a solo homerun by freshman DH Bob Dubovec.

The Glass Half Full

The UB men's tennis team camped out at the end of last week and began a three-match road trip, where the Bulls appeared comparable to a pack of charitable cub scouts.Armed with the camping supplies necessary to "rough it" in their trademark tents for two nights, the Bulls checked any resemblance to a charitable attitude at the Alumni Arena door.

"Senior Citizen Ball a Hit With Participants, Organizers, and Community"

When it came to glitz and glamour, Saturday's Senior Citizen Ball in Harriman Hall may not exactly have measured up to the high school prom.But when it came to fun for 40 seniors long past their senior years in high school, Saturday's ball was the best show in town.With food, music, dancing and entertainment for all ages, the Phi Eta Sigma honor society held its third-annual Senior Citizen Ball this weekend.
