Fighting Arts Exhibited in Union Lobby

Martial arts buffs received a rare treat at the first joint showcase of five different fighting styles at the second Martial Arts Expo Monday in the Student Union Lobby.Members of various UB martial arts club demonstrated eight form exhibitions, including karate, kendo, judo, tae kwon do, kuk sool won, goju ryu karate, wing chun kung fu and san shou, or Chinese kickboxing.This was the second annual expo by the Combined Martial Arts Club in conjunction with the Tae Kwon Do Club and Seido Karate Club."All martial arts groups on campus come and showcase their different arts," said Mateo Prendergast, a senior computer engineering major and president of the club.

Sharing Treasures From Asia

An eclectic marketplace set up shop in the Student Union lobby Wednesday as several Asian countries showcased their cultures at the Asian Bazaar."Asian Bazaar is one of four cultural programs we do throughout the academic year for students throughout the campus," said Teah Sievers, graduate assistant for Student Multicultural Affairs, which coordinated the event with the Student Planning Committee.

Sub-Board Day a Hit With Students

The Anti-Rape Task Force continued its Violence Against Women Awareness Week Tuesday amid a carnival-like atmosphere, as Sub-Board I, Inc. held its ninth-annual Sub-Board I Day in the Student Union."We pull all the different divisions of the Sub-Board-I, Inc. into the Student Union, since we are not centrally located, and tell students what we are all about," said Marc Stellrecht, a senior management major and SBI's marketing director.At noon, about 20 men and women with the Task Force held a 15-minute "march against violence.""We are trying to educate students in UB and get them to stand up against violence," said Erica Beggs, program coordinator for the Anti-Rape Task Force and a senior psychology major.

Salvation Through The Eyes of Different Faiths

Shaikh M. Ibrahim Memon and Dr. Stuart Chen stood side by side Tuesday night as two distinguished men of two different faiths came together for the same reason: to speak at UB's "Muslim and Christian Dialogue" series.An attentive crowd of over 50 attended the lecture, which was held in 145B Student Union and ran for two hours.

A Face Lift for the Police Station

After five months of renovations to Bissell Hall so the outdated University Police headquarters could better serve the needs of UB's growing campus, construction is coming to a close.Construction began in October of 2003 and should be completed by mid-March, according to John Grela, director of public safety."It was never big enough for operations," Grela said.
