No Flu Shots at UB This Fall
By BILL NIELSEN | Oct. 13, 2004With the temperature dropping and flu season advancing, UB will be unable to provide flu shots for nearly 3,500 students enrolled this semester, according to UB Health Services.In the past, UB has provided vaccinations to students in order to prevent outbreaks of sickness on campus, but this year the corporation that provides UB with the medicine, Chiron, will be unable to release a supply for the fall 2004 through the winter 2005 period due to their license being suspended in Great Britain.The news came as a shock to UB Health Services in the wake of a nationwide shortage of the vaccine.

Hangovers: Nature's Punishment For Those Who Overindulge

Programs like "D.A.R.E." and "Just Say No" are designed to create awareness of alcohol's dangerous effects from a very young age.But these educational programs have nothing on Mother Nature and her dreaded hangover."A hangover is telling your body that drinking too much was very bad for you, and that you should not drink that much ever again," said Marla Jurek, a certified rehabilitation counselor at the Wellness Center.Besides severely taxing the body's liver, kidneys, brain and other internal organs, alcohol puts those who overindulge at risk of death."Alcohol is a poison and it can kill you, just like any other poison," said Frank Johnson of the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information.Ingesting alcohol dehydrates the body, drains it of vitamins and minerals, and depresses the central nervous system, Johnson said.

"Problems With Lot Lighting, Blue Light Phones Addressed by Safety Committee"
By JENNIFER NIELSON | Oct. 13, 2004Students are less safe on campus because of problems with blue light phones and insufficient lighting in parking lots, UB and community officials said Tuesday at a Personal Safety Committee meeting.Amy Vincent, a representative from the Anti-Rape Task Force, said many students have complained to her over the years that the blue lights on safety phones are too high up and the lights themselves aren't strong enough at night."The pole is too high up and the trees cover the light, causing the students to wonder where the nearest blue light phone is located," Vincent said.Another problem with the blue lights is that some of them are often damaged or knocked over by snowplows during the winter months because they are too close to the curb, said John Grela, director of public safety.Grela added that just this week, UB has started the process of fixing the blue light units "vandalized" by snowplows last winter.
